Printer drivers

Not often I ask for help....but this time I need some guidance. My printer (Canon i950) started playing up so I un-installed and re-installed only for the "legend" to pop up and tell me that no printer driver is installed. Tried "Driver Detective" but not willing to pay for something that should already be there (tightwad). Any ideas please as I really get stuck without the printer. Ta. BY.

some times I found that with printers I had to install via the disk then connect the printer and then search for the drivers via disk dont ask why but I just found that on some printers this is how it was.

that was with millenium though

You may have already done this Bryan, but go on to the Canon website, download and install the latest driver and then reboot.

Bryan,

Uninstall the drivers, remove the printer connection in device manager,
then reboot and the computer will ask for the driver disk and install for you.........

Yes turn off then on before you do uninstall printer in control panel but leave connected start comp then comp fins printer and asks for disc [basically]

Thank you Roy. Now all I have to do is to work out how to do it! This little saga is beginning to have a comic side to it...the blind leading the blind and the one-eyed man is king and all that. But I shall now try your suggestions....I may be some time......

Seriously though, Roy is right. If you are not sure how to do it then try Googling "Uninstall printer Driver" and you will get a selection of step by step instructions. By reading several of these it should be possible to puzzle out what you need to do on your machine. If when switching on,the PC detects that a printer is installed but has no driver, it should do most if not all the work for you.

But it may take some time.... ;)

press "start" on the bottom left of your computer a window opens
goto>"control panel" click on that
then> look for and click on "add/remove" programmes
then> look for the programme you want to remove then click on that programme's "remove" button
then> close the window ..(.red X in top right corner)
goto> start ( on the botton left of your screen) click on that and a window opens
look for the prompt that says "turn off computer" click on that
another window opens click on the "restart" button... this will turn off the computer and  turn in on again (rebooting it)
check when computer is fully "booted up" that the programme has been removed.
with the printer turned on (I think)( to let the computer know that it is there )
install your printer software as prompt by the installation programme on your disc / or the  wizard if you prefer and then reboot your computer as before. the drivers for your printer should be part of the package unless you need to update, then its off the the printer makers site.
check that your disc is clean no dust or light smears

I forgot to turn my printer on and it took an hour to realise it  l.o.l.   {-)

Surely the driver(s) are  part of the software package.

Me thinks  and it might be best to just remove the printer's installation programme and start again. basic package boot up, then any updates boot up again

They are on the disc but if hes got newer software for operating system might not recognize drivers
whadda i know just build the darn things LOL

start
control panel
open printers
file
server properties
click drivers tab
in the ..install printers drivers list click the driver to be removed
click remove
yes to confirm

Don't know if  this is right  . I just to prefer to clear the decks and start again

Shhh Colin - you've just given away how we do anything in the (paying) IT-fixin' world.

If I stumble across something wildly unusual at work, job one is "give me five minutes" and Google for any solutions available online. 99% of the time someone else has had the same problem and posted it.

NEVER pay for IT support!  :D

Don't need Goooogle all the info is either in the computer or @ Microsoft.com

Its helped me a lot over the years.  Also I did one of those City n Guilds courses on stripping down these machines and rebuilding them from scratch then put the software into them . After working on typewriters for years then the Word Processor (Huh) mes had enough  of machines. Mind you its a  lot better and cleaner than being an Agricultural Engineer.

I need a replacement for Microsoft Office 2000 professional disc 2. As my disc is cracked any ideas anybody.

The big problem with looking at microsoft's site is that while the information is probably there, it is invariably couched in terms that are totally incomprehensible.  I often wind up looking at
www.theeldergeek.com
where the answers turn up in English.  Often.  Quite often, anyway.
The biggest problem is usually wording the question "correctly" so that the answer coming back has some relevance to the question I thought I was asking.

Know what you mean about Microsoft, I get to where I am looking for eventually.

I've  just have a little history with computers and  the machines before them and its helps. Gone are the days of the manuals.

I'll have a look at that site so far looks o.k.

Wording questions, I Goooogle but trying to cross reference like...   Swains + St rood  or Tescos + Gillingham the + seams to be important

Just a small addition.

If the printer is attached via USB.

Disconnect USB cable first. Then un-install. Then re-install. Only then re-connect the USB cable.
