A daft purchase...
« on: October 01, 2008, 04:29:54 am »

Okay Probably a bad direction to be heading...
It begs a new build, something big, flat...An AHTS or PSV
ooh, Graupner Seabex comes to mind...nah, should be scratch built..
Have to make up for buying this RTF thing...  ::)

By the look of it, the boat will at least need to have a slalvage
crane mounted for at sea recovery.

Brilliant, I can't get these things to land on the lawn never mind on a tug, mine would need to be fitted with floats!!

Take care of that nice tug! Those rotor blades will act like a well known make of lawn mower on anything in their path...

I am pretty confident, that if I hit the mast, the
helicopter is going to lose a propeller blade.  ???
The uptakes have brass square tubing in the corners.
Heli in the water is the bigger concern.

The weather is heading for a turn, so not sure if
I will make it out to the pond... In the mean time
some preparations are being made for the pilots safety.

One part of me screams; yes, go for it, do it!   ;D The other part whispers; oh no, not that fine little helicopter, it's a shame if it ends up in the water.  :'( (So lucky me it ain't my decision, but I'll be with you whatever you choose. :-\ Just so you know! O0

You know me and a buddy were talking about this exact thing yesterday! How spooky!
Glad to see someone is giving it a go.

I don't have anything big or flat in my inventory at the moment and I think at the pond, in a hard turn and a bit of chop, the heli would just fall right off into the water knowing my luck!

We did discuss an extra channel with an electro-magnet on the deck, and change the heli skids from plastic to metal - but then it all got a big silly :D

Update...

Between sprinkles, I ran down to the closest pond.
The air was much calmer than the last two days...
However, there was just the hint of a breeze on the water.

A hint too much. my first attempt ended up all down wind.
The second attempt started up wind, and the Heli made it
out to the boat, However it was all down wind from there.
The heli ended up touching the water, and there was not
enough power to break the water tension and pull the floats free....

I had to recover it with the tug.    ::)

Umi

It might be possible to reduce the effects of surface tension on the floats by re-profiling them to a more conventional hull shape, or possibly a a deep 'V'.  As the chopper lifts out of the water, the area of float in contact with the water would decrease exponentially?

It goes without saying that both floats should be as near identical as possible to aid a clean, vertical lift.
