Rudder - propshaft - coupling connections.
« on: October 12, 2008, 07:33:13 pm »

I have recently connected the propshaft to the coupling, and then coupling to the motor. When I have powered up the motor the propshaft tends to screw itself into the coupling further causing the motor to seriously labour and the coupling goes out of shape under the strain! There is also some backwards and forewards movement with the propshaft.

Could someone please assist me in describing how to correctly connect the said items, in particular what to do with the nuts on the propshaft - or point me in the direction of the information on the forum. (I had a look but could not find anything).

Thanks.

Connect your propshaft to the coupling at one end and the prop at the other, after putting a nut on each end of the shaft.

Check by hand that the shaft turns ok, then tighten one nut up against the coupling and the other nut up against the prop.

Make sure nothing moves while you are tightening the nuts.  :-))

Dicky is right (as usual)  :-)) the only thing I would add is to ensure the nuts are really tight, so use a spanner.

Cheers

Lots of oil on the shaft afterwards!
