Receiver Aerial
« on: October 24, 2008, 04:10:38 pm »

Hi All,

I've just joined the forum. I'm building my first radio control model boat which is Robbe's Antje 11. I considered it to be a good model to start with and I am enjoying it very much.

I'm sure that some of my questions will have been asked before and I'm sorry for that.

The model instructions suggest fitting some brass wire as a receiver ariel underneath the deck but the Futuba instruction manual says not to alter the length of the receiver wire  (R122JE).

Can I assume that if I keep the combined length of the brass ariel and the receiver wire to the same length as the original receiver wire all will be well?

Cheers for now and glad to be with you.

Yes, that's the proper thing to do Chris, keep the aerial the same length.

...... but you wouldn't think so from all the ribbing I got on this other thread, a good read though!

Hi, Chris, welcome aboard!

There are NO questions that shouldn't be asked, there are lots of mayhem helpers who will dive in and help!

Short answer - YES
You will not go wrong in doing this, you can do better by getting as much of the combined length vertical as reasonable possible - I use thin copper wire from a transformer as mast shrouds - up one side and down the other

There has recently been a long and exotic discussion of aerial length - if you want the long answer

But in summary this said - "its not critical"

ask for any more help you might need as you go

I personally would not bother with the brass wire and would just use the Rx cable left the same length.

Most of my boats have the Rx cable running round the inside of the hull and I have not had any trouble.

I do the same as  DickyD  and make sure the ariel is above water level in the model and as far away from electrical things as possible.

The older radios 27 MHz had longer ariel wire than latter ones.

You will not go far wrong if you follow the advice of DickyD & Seaspray. I never cut an ariel, just keep it as far away from the dirty wires as possible.

Further to which, if I want to use a receiver in more than one model, does it do any harm to cut the aerial say 4" from the Rx and use a 1mm gold connector (as used in electric aeroplanes)  to re-connect the rest of the aerial? Then I can install aerials in various models and just plug in the Rx.

Should be fine.    BTW while all this is fine for 27MHz or 40MHz, 2.4GHz is a very diferent kettle of fish and the aerials should be left strictly as supplied.

I do occasionally move receivers from model to model, especially if I at a weekend show and have a problem with a receiver and don't have a spare with me, but I still keep the Ariel the original lenght, why leave yourself open to problems when it is not necessary.
