I have just made this little item to help with serving I saw a similar one on a Swiss site and thought I would have a go.
It works well.

It looks like it is for wrapping thread, similar to how they wind wire around a central core to make bass guitar strings.......................But I could be wrong ok2 ok2 ok2

NEW COMPETITION? Guess what it is.

My guess: it is a device for wrapping a protective outer coating of twine around a cable or sheet.

It is definitely not like the "server" or "serveuse" in my local restaurant!

Well done Collin, with the counter weight adjustable its possible to give the thing a flick and the thread is served (wrapped) around the main rope as the whole gadget spins.  A real fiddle without one. To be honest I could not understand how it worked until I made it. The split in the mallet (correct term) allows the serving to be done while the rigging is in place.

There are 2 others.... "Worming", Parcelling, and then Serving. Heavens above, unless you are building a 1:1 model do you really need to go to these extremes? You will know, but how many others will? I find that just wrapping fuse wire around a "splice" does the job.

It was developed to meet a need rigging on a 3rd rate man of war at a scale of 1:64
Ya it is rather extream but it was fun to make works well and actually makes the job easier.
Lets face it spending hours on model making is strange by most peoples standards but it makes me happy.
This is the work station I use when rigging.

Not that it helps a lot, but memories of my Naval days, "worm and parcel with the lay, serve it up the other way" drummed into us in HMS Ganges in the early fifties, before we were let loose on the fleet!
