Capricorn 54 540EP Sport Boat RTR
« on: October 21, 2008, 03:01:34 pm »

Howdy fellas,

Names Nige, I'm friends of a couple of other noobs on here ( Rich and Lee ) , i'm used to racing nitro buggies and slope souring but after playing around with Lee's Capricorn 54 I'm deciding to have a go at this boat lark.

So basically it's that time old question - Where to start , I was thinking of the Capricorn 54 aswell but I'm also liking the look of the Hobby engine Swordfish as this has the metal rudder and prop for when i decide to go brushless , it comes with the 550 water cooled engine, but it is about £50 more than a Capricorn and I'm not sure if it's wirth the extra pennies.

Can anyone offer some advice on this Swordfish.

I've also been thinking that if i'm going to go brushless at some point should i just do it first as last, somethning like the Amax Nimbus which is as said brushless already, but it's 180 notes with no TX ??

So basically some advice really.

Thanks for reading.

Yeah Martin that's the Capricorn.

And this is the Swordfish.

but I can get it a bit cheaper than that though.

The Swordfish is a better boat than the CBM Capricorn 54 in that it's a fibreglass hull, and a higher power boat all round.
Once you start and find you're getting into model boats, looking at the specs, I think you'll find the Hobby Engine Swordfish RTR
a better boat to experiment with, ie. a bigger motor, higher voltage batteries, upgrade the running gear - same with the
Amax Volvo Nimbus - http://www.storacingproducts.com/amax-volvo-nimbus-brushless-power-p30200.html. The Capricorn 54
is more of a 'slightly better than the norm' entry level speed boat.

One question, for that Volvo boat (which in my honest opinion looks a bit too toy like), where are you going to get a replacement D42/P1.2 Dog Drive prop from?

You also will have to buy a Li-Po battery charger, and they claim of "speeds up to 40mph". No chance...
They also claim to have a 25A esc, which is nowhere near enough for a 550 size brushless with 25c Li-Po's,  2.25Ah x 25 = 56.25 Amps...
