Name plate!!
« on: September 07, 2006, 11:29:03 pm »

Its pick your brains time!
I have chosen the name of my vessel, 'The Impervious', but am stuck on how to display her name! ???
I look at other models and long for the engraved wooden name boards! Can one purchase such an item made up to my requirements (expensive if indeed you can I would imagine).
Any ideas, recomendations, site links welcome on this one!
Thanks all

Hi...   pics looking good!

You could try some Slaters (or similar - various sizes) plastic lettering which the railway modellers use for signal box and station name boards - its just a case of getting the distance correct between certain letters (if you know what I mean) but they're fairly simple to do. Any decent model shop should stock them.

Cheers, Brian

Thanks, is that a raised lettering or flat vinyl?

Hi... Yep, these are raised lettering, but if you stick them to some thin plasticard to suit (as a base for the nameboard) then you could sand the lot down carefully (even depth) with some fine Wet n' Dry to the final depth you prefer.

Brian- ever had a try at www.modelflags.com?

There you may find some imaginations about the lettering for a nameplate. I use to take a piece of brassplate and place their decals on, then paint the back with Acrylic-colour and leave it in an old jam-glass with acid (from electronic-stores for board-etching). After two hours you have an etched nameplate, like the origin. Looks brilliant and is a real unique detail on the boat.

Thanks, Jorg, I'll have a look at that, not had the need for anything like that as yet, but will certainly bear it in mind! Cheers, Brian

You could try some of the shops/kiosks that cut keys. They often do small engravings for cups, medals etc and they are quite cheap and will engrave on most metals and plastics.

Bobby, you`re welcome  :)
You could also use these rub-on letters, which will be used for print-boards, also available at electronic-stores. They are available down to a size of 2mm height (very good for scale 1:96).
We also had made a test with the letters of BECC and put them on a nameplate for a stand. Then we went over with fine-corned sandblasting-pistol. After polishing the result was amazing!

I found a cloth Royal Navy cap band with the ships name on it.
Made a "different" name plate for my HMS Victory.

Just a thought....what about approaching your local undertaker, someone there will know who, or actually does engraving,
or am I just thinking outside the box again?
