Drive train suggestions?
« on: September 07, 2006, 03:32:52 pm »

I've run across an interesting question in another forum.  Someone wants to use a single IC engine to power two props in a fairly large MTB/launch hull (9 feet).  They are thinking about using a two speed transmission and a differential.  One of the suggestions was to find a 'smallish' three-wheeler and adapt the trans/diff from that to the boat.  Considering the size of the hull it's not impossible (my suggestion, and I know how 'odd' it sounds).  Another suggestion was to use a variable pitched prop, much simpler, cheaper?  I am also aware that there are gearings to do the 'splitting' to the two props thingy, but the 'catch' is the two speed transmission thingy (high/low gears).
Any suggestions?

PLEASE!  I'm embarrassed by the suggestions I made and want to redeem myself!

In my own experience with IC engines, I've found that there is no need for 2 speed transmission as the throttle range is quite wide.
I would suggest a clutch if wanted to continue to running the motors without the boat moving, the car boys use a centrefugal clutch to achieve this.

There are several ways of splitting the drive to 2 shafts, but it all depends wheather you want to use belts or gears and wheather you want contrarotating props.

i would go along with the centrifugal clutch, they are so simple. The onlt thing against its use would be the rather odd noise from them, which does not sound very nautical or seamanlike!!

Why 2 props in the model, 1 would be so much simpler and at that size the equipment is readily available "off the shelf" to power a small ski boat.

As to the 'why' two props, or for using a 'differential', I have no idea, it was just what was stated in the original post.  I have a feeling that it was because of a lack of 'nautical' terminology and just not knowing what else to call it (having the same 'lack', I know how that feels).  Not being that familiar with IC engines the clutch was one thing I didn't think about, I'll mention that.

I just happen to have the rear-end/differential from an old truck.  I wonder if he'd be interested?
