miniature propshaft couplings...

Does anyone know if it’s at all possible to buy motor to shaft couplings to connect 380 size motors to a 1/16th diameter propshafts?

I bought just such an item from SHG myself at the show.  A simple UJ unit with interchangeable inserts so that you can match motor and propshaft diameters.

For a heavier duty version of the UJ see the Ripmax website.

If you aren't putting a lot of torque through the joint, simple rubber tube will do the job. Try fuel line from model aircraft suppliers like Howes.

Small bore silicone tubing is good for this type of coupling - strip the insulation off a 1 inch length of silicne wire, and use the insulation!
It even has helical "grip grooves" on the inside.

I don't think that there is anything that a 380 can do what would worry a tube coupling
If the propshaft is a little too small for comfortable grip inside the tube sleeve it with heatshrink, or a short section of sleeving from a smaller cable

cheap and quiet and effective - just like me :}

And if the tube coupling starts to slip, roughen up the shaft surfaces and use a tiny drop of superglue!  :-))

I have been  known to slide a short sleeve of brass tube over the slipping end so that it increases the "grip" of the tube

My brass tubes come from salvaged radio aerials - they also make great punches by sharpening the ends and also rudder bearing tubes, etc.

I used UV joints on the U-boat conversion to start with but didn't like them as they were not perfectly balanced and vibrated.  I cahnged to using the Robbe silicone tubes and they run beautifully smoothly now.

I put a spot of superglue on them to ensure they don't slip which can easily be removed with a craft knife and abrasives if you need to.  For this size of motor they are easily the best type of coupling.

Excellent...thank you gentlemen, much appreciated. I like the rubber tube idea (seeing as how it's free... :-))), got yards of brass tube laying about, got gallons of superglue as well...rubber tube sounds good!

Cheers guys,
