Wood types

Hi Everyone
Does anyone have any info regarding wood types and their suitability for modelling?
I am looking at Maple or Ash.

... personally speaking, I don't, but wondered if you saw the earlier posting from scale timber :

i  can supply the following timber for model making. redwood, cedar, ash, oak, occasionally iroko and mahogany. sizes start at 12mm x 1mm and go up to 25mm x 25mm. lengths are up to 36".
custom sizes can be catered for. look at my e bay shop....G SCALE RAILWAY TIMBER SUPPLIES.

Ash is a very hard and difficult to work wood it is also rather wide grained.
I use Lemonwood for masts it has a long straight grain.
The fruit woods are very good for model use fine grained with good cutting qualities I am using Pear at the moment its a great looking wood and a joy to work with.
 English Lime wood is an inexpensive timber with very little grain I am using it for the Keel and frames on my next project.
I hope that this helps I will look up a couple of sites over the next few days and post them.

Another good timber for modelling is Tasmanian Huon Pine, vrey close grained, light and will not be affected by water ever...

Maple is one of my favourites in modeling, fine and straight grained- very easy to work with and very stable. For planking I prefer Limba as it is cheap and can be formed perfectly when wet. All fruit-woods are excellent for decks and cabins, as long as they don`t have any boughs. Oak is none of my favourites as it needs to be cooked for planking and forming...  :P

Many thanks for the replies. I have been in touch with a local furniture maker, and it looks like he can supply me with Maple, Birch, Poplar, Pear. Due to the grain of Ash I have ruled that out. I have used poplar and as long as I cut out the 'olive' coloured bits I may be able to use it. My preferance is leaning towards maple or birch.
