Planked hull problem
« on: November 23, 2008, 07:40:02 pm »

Hi there, since my last post on here, I have now finished the hull of my Thames Barge but,,,,, since doing my first flotation test, a problem has struck from the depths of my bath. I've obviously sanded the hull too much, resulting in cracks along the planking. She was watertight and was only sealed with a few coats of spray paint, no varnish,etc.. Will a polyurethane varnish seal her sufficiently?

No glass?... no sealant? (prior to painting?)....  :o

You have nothing to lose by trying varnish on the outside, but that may react with your paintwork and you will end up removing (yep, sanding) the whole lot off and starting again.

You may find that varnish will seal the hull, but not for long... in which case you are back to sanding again..

I always use a two-part resin on the inside - a good thick coat of Z-Poxy
