Trapped nerve? I have a spare TENS machine; you're welcome to give that a whirl if you like. It's not an instant wonder cure, and I'm still not certain that is was the TENS unit that finally eased the pain when I had similar in my spine. But sure is a lot better than some psysiotherapist pummeling the heck out of you.
Any help to you?

Well I'm guessing it's a trapped nerve...... and not a mini stroke!
Can on very suddenly yesterday morning between getting up and arriving at work.
Only relief I can get is holding my elbow over my head.... you try that for an hour!  :((

Martin,

The trapped nerve is not the real problem, that can be eased with a tens machine or some physio. You need to find out what is causing it. In my case it was a perferated disc in the neck, even though the pain was across the shoulder and down the arm. Better to get it checked out by the Pros. amigo.

If it's as bad as that Martin then get it checked out as Barry says.

Martin,

I hope my telling you about my left shoulder has not brought yours on!

But as the guys say....get it checked out.

Mine is an old rugby injury which resurfaces about every 5 years. The only relief I get is from acupuncture. over the years, i and all the Drs. have tried everything from tablets to massage. I went to an acupuncturist and told him I did not believe in acupuncture! Hoever, he did not throw me out. he said, "You don't need "belief" for acupuncture, it works and has been practised long before other forms of treatment". It did work but now I have to find a French practitioner.

Martin, you may possibly have torn a small rotary cuff ligament in the affected shoulder,   i have had it ,it does happen with continuous use ,and this means years and years of lifting pulling and generally hard work ,it just happens ,klik and you have it ,,,my answer was physio ,also one of my son,s is a profesional sports science guy and he set me up with exercises  ,what had to stop was ,,i sold the Imara  and a few other heavy boats are laid up ,,Martin this is only a friendly help ,i could be wrong ,,but your symptons sound like same ,,,,i hope you get some relief it is nasty ,and the pain kiillers helped ,in their way ,,

Just come back from the quack, nice bloke actually!
Just a slight case of rigour mortise....

Turns out I shouldn't have gone out on Sunday in that snow shower... and not lifting a couple of heave bags of gritting salt properly.
So dam painful Rhomboids spasm has set in.Two days off work, massage and pain killers. (Told Mrs Mayhem to get out the horse liniment and a smile!)

Doc's given me some suppositories, "For the good they'll do Doc," I said, "I may as well shove them up my ....behind!   {-)
(One of my all-time favourite jokes! )

I tried that horse liniment Martin,  didn't do much for my neck and shoulder pain.....  I don't mind though...  I won two races at Chepstow and the wife has entered me in the five-furlong handicap.   (Got a clout of her when i suggested that she was my only handicap)     bigH
