Models by Design?
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:26:59 pm »

Hi, has anyone had any experience with Models by Design. They seem to have a great selection of kits, especially fishing boats. I'd just like to get some insight on the quality of the kits since I'll probably pay as much shipping as the kit will cost...

Thanks

Andy's hulls are the best I've ever seen - by quite a long way. The guy has a long history in the GRP industry and clearly knows what he's about. I wouldn't hesitate on the grounds of quality.

Brian,

I'm currently halfway through a build of the 1/16th scale Cygnus SF33.
Great quality kit. Mouldings have clean lines.
Purchased the hull, deck, cabin roof and capping rail which are all made from GRP (Fibreglass). I'm considering replacing the GRP capping rail with wood strip. The cabin comes with pre marked windows which saves time. Different colours of mouldings are available.
Plastic window frames are available and are of good quality as are other resin fittings. There is also a plan available from MBD and gives a good indication of where everything should be, although this is of a GM33 which is similar except for the bulbous bow of the SF33.

Because of the subject matter its easy to adapt the model to suit your own taste. A quick Goggle for Cygnus images results in a good selection of full sized boats with different types of general arrangements.

I saw them at a show earlier this year.

The hulls look to be of very high quality, and the owner seems to be a very friendly, helpful, genuine chap.

I do like the look of the cyngus.

Your right about them been tough , the one i had would plough through the waves  with ease .

this one was sent to me by Andy to show how the boat will handle the rough ,the wind speed was 30mph .

Thank you everyone for replying. Now all I have to do is decide which one (s) I need, I'm favoring the Cygnus 38 and the North Sea 38..

Is Metcalf Mouldings and Models by Design the same company? They both advertise identical models of the Cygnus 38 and North Sea 38. I'm getting confused....

I think MBD bought the hulls from Metcalfe. The later only sell complete kits now.

Thanks again. I couldn't decide which one I wanted to build so I bought both. I'll explain (or try to) that shipping was cheaper with 2 boats in the box rather than one.

as with everyone else you cant fault the guy and the service he provides.  he even cut a hull in half for me to cut down freight costs to nz and remoulded the cut ends so all i had to do was bolt the two halves together. join is hardly noticeable
