Model Slipways - Wyeforce Info
« on: September 14, 2006, 11:23:18 am »

Hi Guys

I was just wondering if any of you have built or know anybody that had built the Wyeforce Tugboat from Model Slipways?  I am thinking about buying this model - it will be my first attempt at RC Boat Building.  Is it a good model to start on?
Any Info on the Wyeforce will be appreciated

Cheers

I've just brought home the box as well! Trying to find room to build the base and sort out the pieces. I also want to find the earlier articles in Model Boats - you might be interested in them as well when I locate them.
I haven't sorted out the motors yet - will probably try the Robbe or Graupner gearbox units. What are you thinking of using?
Looking forward to the progress.
Regards,
Mike

I have built a couple of Model Slipway Models. The best advice i can give, would be for you to give Norry a ring and he can advise you. He does do others in the range which would be better for a newcomer. I would highly recommend the Pilot Launch, it's a nice size boat, designed for a beginner, with a number of pre-fabricated parts like the vac formed superstructure, and not to mention easy to follow instructions.
Start off with a semi-quick build model like the pilot launch, it will still take you 2-3months to build. Some of the other boats in the range can take up to 12 months or more,  not to mention the number of problems along the way, which could put you off.

Hope this helps!

Try Graupner's Speed 720 Torgue with direct drive, or Speed 900 Torgue if you need lots of power.

Josh,
I have built the 'Wyeforce'.  It is a very, very nice kit.  The people at "Model Slipway" ~really~ go out of their way to be helpful, and the kit is well thought out and isn't all ~that~ difficult to build.
Having said that, it might not be the best "first boat" for someone who has absolutely no experience using hand tools, measuring, and reading instructions/drawings.  If you at least recognise what a sharp knife is, can get your shoes on the correct foot at least half the time, and won't try to complete the thing two hours after it arrives, I think you'd really enjoy it.
The 'key' to building any kit is understanding what the instructions are telling you to do.  Reading the instructions and having at least some idea of what they are telling you -IS- required!  If you don't understand something either ask questions or think about it till you do understand (don't glue/cut till you do).  This forum (and others) and 'Model Slipway' are good places to do the question asking.

PS - Expect 'goofs', everyone has them... except me, I'm perfect, you know.  (and if you believe that, I've got this bridge for sale.)  Fixing 'goofs' is how the average person learns things.  All joking aside, if I can build the thing I don't see why you can't.  Have fun.

Thanks Guys, that was really good info.  Ill get in contact with a distributor in Oz.

Doc - This will be my first RC Boat, but Ive built plenty of other plastic ship, plastic helicopters etc kits. I have also built a Rc Kit Car.  And I did a Woodworking back at school.
I work in Construction (Doing Sub division) so I can read plans and measure stuff.  As they say in Woodworking - Measure twice, Cut Once.
Also most days I put my workboots on the correct feet - but boy is it uncumfy if I put it on the wrong foot!  I hate Mondays, so thats probably when I attempt to put my left Redback onto my right foot!
Thanks mate you info was greatly appreciated, I ring the Model shop in the next few days

Have a good weekend, or whats left of it in my case

Cheers
