Live Steam Locos.
« on: August 13, 2008, 11:23:23 pm »

I am very new to this hobby I only got into it because my club http://www.nlsme.co.uk/ has a large boating pond that very few members use so some of us steamers have started using it. I`m mainly into Gauge1 live steam and have a collection of Aster loco's which I run at our club track and I also have a 5" loco which I mainly run on Sundays pulling public around.

after a while I have been busy finishing off a larger 5" loco called 'Anthony Manor' it's totally built from scratch only some castings although the boiler was made by a professional boiler maker. She had her first steam tests last week and got all her certificates to pull the public at my club I must say it's very powerful and an enjoy to sit behind and drive. :D

Nice work on the Manor!!   :-)) What?....a GWR loco from a spam can man?!  ok2
I've been puttering away, between boats, on my 7 1/4" GWR King. I've used Reeves castings and drawings and had the boiler built by Swindon Boiler Works. The loco has gone together once, I then took it down again to paint and do final assembly which is what I'm into right now.
I've done several other locos too, a Kerr Stuart "Wrenn" in 7 1/4" gauge, 3 1/2" gauge Princess Marina and a 4 3/4" gauge 08 diesel shunter with drawings and castings from Blackgates.

Here are 2 shots of a New South Wales Government Railways C36 class express loco. The photos were taken in Maryborough, Queensland, a couple of years ago, and I don't know the owner/builder's name.

Hi Phil, Is that a 'Britannia' if so is a scratch built or a Winson/Modelworks one? Looking at your location what club are you in? I also have a 5" Brit which is a much modified Winson kit she a perfect runner and given me hours of joy.

John It's beyond me how you work on a 71/4 Gauge my loco's are heavy lumps when I need to work on them and I dread to think of the cost of that boiler :-).

I agree she is a bit of a lump. Thats why you can see Gerry George and Tony Burrell laughing. They helped me get it out of the basement for a show , and they're laughing wondering how I'm going to get it back down without them. (They did come to the rescue ...bless them).
I normally work in 1" or 3/4" scale, but some of the castings for this loco came available at a good price. Having spent many hours on the platforms of Didcot, Newbury, Oxford and Paddington watching these majestic machines roll through I couldn't pass up the opportunity to build a model of one.
The cost of the boiler ........best not talked about........I'm trying to forget that part. I didn't have the facilities to build such a large boiler, so had to have it made. Swindon was the best choice. Its interesting, the boiler is stamped and certified to British standards, but that doesn't mean anything here. It certainly should be certified here, but we don't have any regulations for copper boilers.
