correct location - Shafts and P brackets.
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:45:34 pm »

Not sure if I should post here but Martin #1 will more than likely move this post - sorry.

Problemo:-

I have just started my build of HMS Vanguard Battleship at 1:128 scale and wish to ask the forum for clarification on a little problem.

My concern is with the correct placement of the Prop shafts and P Brackets.

I have purchased the Fleetscale hull and it comes with the shaft outlets and P bracket mountings located on the hull. First – all 4 prop shafts must be parallel to the keel.
Side view, the drawing shows the shafts being about 5 degrees off parallel to keel. This means that I need to extend the slots in hull to make shafts very shallow, which in turn the motors will be very low in hull.

There is NO stern view – Question - are the vee shaped P brackets suppose to be vertical with the centre line or are they set on an angle as there is nothing on the plan to indicate this plus I cannot find a photo of the ship showing props.

Last, how deep do you set the P brackets into the hull or in other words, how much clearance must the props be from the hull – any ideas or thoughts.

I take it that the standard procedure is to make the slots for the shafts, set height and spacing, place 2 blocks of wood either side of shaft slot and then either epoxy or P38 into place. – Is that right.

Thanks in advance

it sounds like you have "A" frames not "P" frames

your install method is right but as for spacing you would need to check the drawings
is there any marks on the hull where the "A" frames should be on
my fleetscale T22 hull there was some small rectangles sitting proud that were the marks for where the
"A" frames should go

I usually cut slightly oversize holes in the hull.
Leave about 1/2 inch proud inside the hull.
Line the shafts up and tack with superglue (Zapagap).
Leave the model for a few hours or overnight.
Go back and check that everything is still aligned as you want it.
Fill the gaps with P38 from the inside so it is proud on the outside of the hull.
Again leave overnight then cover the P38 with epoxy resin.
Fair off the outside of the hull.
With a dremmel cut the top of the legs off inside the hull flush with the top of the epoxy and just put a dab of epoxy on the cut part.
As P38 is porous the epoxy seals this on the inside and the outside is protected with paint.
With this method I have seen boats dropped on the shafts and actually bent the "A" frames but still solid so the "A" frames were just straightened.

Hi Gingyer,

Correct again, "A" frames - locations are marked on hull (I also have the T22 hull). It appears that if I place the A Frames and shafts on the locations noted on hull, the 'A' frames would be at say 45 degree angle to the hull centre line. Did not know if this would be correct. Also, much much of a gap between prop and hull is required??

Will check out the link provided and see if I can pick up some info...Thanks

Bob,

Thanks for reinforcing my thoughts on how to mount shafts and frames.  :-))

Do you have any idea if the "A" frames should be at an angle to the hull centre line??

if you look at a side-on drawing it should show the shaft and the distance from
hull to the centre of the shaft. then it should ensure the prop is clear
of the hull

Thanks again Andy,

Just had another look at the drawing. You are correct once more (lucky me). If I set up prop shafts at angle shown on plan to the keel, then it doesn't matter if "A" frames are at an angle to the hull Center line.?? The T22 plans are much clearer and easier to understand and install.

Just had a quick look at Stuart Boilton's Vanguard on the Fleetscale site. The picture clearly shows the "A" frames are set at an angle to the hull Center Line. My mind is now at ease and can continue with build - thought I was doing it wrong.

Thanks Andy and Bob on your input - much appreciated... :-)) :-)) :-))

Sorry I misled you Chaps,

I first found  Stuart's Vanguard on the Fleetscale site and copied the photo's to my Vanguard folder. Have now noticed the photo's are no longer on the site - what a pity.

Here are the 2 photo's of Stuart Bolton's HMS Vanguard - what a magnificent build - inspirational

Thanks... yes, he's a pretty clean modeller is our Stuart.

I wonder why they'd taken them off the site?
