Large model tanker
« on: January 01, 2009, 09:47:28 am »

I have this desire to build a large model tanker probably 2 to 3 meters in length.  Scale detail will not be a priority as I am more interested in the dynamics of  boat of this type.  It would be run in less than calm water and have such things as bow thrusters and some kind of stability control.  The first thing I need to decide on  the method of construction for the hull.  Has anyone done something similar or got any good suggestions.

happy new year martin
how will this beast be transported ?
how much will it weight?
this would be a good time to use free flood chamber that way you won't have to carry around large numbers of batteries or house bricks
good luck

Martin,

A tankers is basically a box with a long parallel section for most of its length and only starts curving at the extremities. That sort of form does not need any sophisticated hull construction.

I built a plug from which a mould was taken, for a University in the south of England to be  used for Tank test studies ( by the tutor and student in marine design and dianamics) on the wave actions which split the real ship in half off Northern Spain, some time ago.
The ship was the bulk tanker "PRESTIGE" (google it and have a look).
I think the moulds for this ship/model (which was about 3 meters long and built to 1:100 scale) is now in the possession of Models by Design.
Hope this helps you in your quest.
Neil. :-))
Looking at the model above, the mouldings were almost identical. :embarrassed:

This is the tug towing guys department I think.  Norry and the Glasgow Richmond Club will be able to advise and the Ellesmere Port club towing team and others into towing all have large tankers.  What is your project going to be used for ?

Hi Gary

Transport.  I will have to make it in sections.
Weight.  Fairly heavy I think.
Flood Chamber.  Yes good suggestion.

Many thanks

Barry M

Hi Barry

I am thinking of a large box section for the middle and bow and stern sections a bit more sophisticated.

Cheers

Last year a friend of mine built a built a plug for a modern container ship. I believe the tanker would have a similar hull profile. He made one hull, of fiberglass, from the plug, for a customer. He still has the plug. If you're interested I can contact him for details. The hull is in the size range you're looking at. I think its eight feet long.

Hi Norry

That's a big one.  I have got some plans of the Bluewhale from MMI which looks similar.  Many thanks for your help, I've been on the club website and seen the photos which are very interesting.

There was a large tanker mould doing the rounds of the clubs a few years ago, after our club took one off, courtesy of Tyne Models, it was taken by a club down south. I noticed in pics' on this very forum of Wings & Wheels 2007 show, a club had done a bulk ore carrier version using the very same hull, I posted and enquiry for a club in Scotland who were keen to build a tanker but no reply was ever forthcoming.

See my post for large model for towing wing & wheels 2007, 25th November 2007
