Proxxon Cutters?
« on: January 09, 2009, 12:04:20 am »

I have just taken delivery of a Proxxon MF70 Milling machine, Dividing head, Vise and 1-2-3mm cutters. I want to create grating and have just done a perfect grating in holly with the 1 Mill cutter. Does anyone know where I can get cheaper milling bits(2 flute cutters) in UK at a resepectable price as I had to pay 20+ for my 3 cutters from proxxon.

BB,

For all my general purpose milling, I use these.

They are centre cutting, so at a push they can be used as slot drills for plunge cutting.

They maybe don't go as small as you would like, but the price is right for them. Even the 2mm solid tungsten are a good price.

Another thought, if you want to go really fine for cutting slots, maybe you should look at slitting saws.

It requires a slightly different method of cutting and setup, but small size mandrel sets can be bought rather cheaply. They don't break as easily as tiny cutters.

If you have a lathe or know someone who has, a slitting saw arbor can easily be knocked up to fit your machine.

For what it is worth (re.my opinion), I would swallow the cost and stick with the Proxxon cutters. They last well and will outlive "stuff" that Dremel produce. Spend more and save in the long run. Having said that, if I only need a cutter for a "one-off" then I will buy the cheaper one and chuck it out when the jobs done. Please, do not run-down Proxxon because of price alone...the quality is there. Needless to say I have no connection apart from being a very satisfied user. BY.

Sorry BB,

Jumped in with both feet before realising you can only hold very small cutters.

You will really need to find a specialist supplier. I was lucky and picked up a load of tungsten cutters with small shanks from a model boat show. But normal small cutters usually come with either 6mm or 1/4" shanks

Maybe you could contact this seller to see if he does the 3mm or 1/8" shanked ones. Nothing lost if he doesn't.
