glass/resin/finishing question
« on: January 10, 2009, 04:25:35 pm »

Hello,
You may have seen me on another forum.  I am new to boat modeling but not building.  I have ask this question elsewhere but I did not exactly understand how the procedure would work or turn out for me.
Attached..... I hope this boat owner does not care.....  I have attached a photo, and this is dtheBasic color scheme I want to achive.  I have looked at many photos on the forums of boats under construction.  I understand the glassing/sanding/ and finishing the hull, inside and out.  The decking and the cabin sides I want to stain, seal, and clear coat, and from a past answer, and photos, assemblygluing of the decking and cabin were done before glassing and applying resin.  I just don't understand how I can achive the look I want since stain will not soak in with resin applied.  It also seems gluing would not be as solid with finish on it.  It was previously mentioned about painting and staining and just being careful etc.  For me..... I don't know if I can do this that well. {:-{
Does someone have a "step procedure" to help me understand?
Thanks,
sloboat

Hi and welcome!

It is not usual or necessary to glass and resin the deck  superstructure. The hull yes - after you have assembled it. The thing you have to be careful with on the deck and superstructure is to keep the glue off the visible surfaces - the ones you want to stain. If you want a really high gloss, in my opinion not appropriate for the type of model shown, you apply the resin AFTER you've stained it.

Hope this helps. It may be worth your while looking at some of the Build Masterclasses that Bluebird has done on this forum

Hi sloboat,
I am well known for never finishing my boats, (paint etc) and the main reason is the same problem you are covering.
I have on the odd occasion, stained the timber before cutting and then sanded back to apply glue to the main areas.
I have also completely epoxied the ply or balsa sheet before starting any work. This helps when sanding back, as it stops sanding through the timber, and also prevents marking the wood during construction. This is a system used on some full sized boats where a varnished finish is to be used.
