Kyosho Oracle Yacht - Mystery Sinking?
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:18:44 pm »

Hi All

This has been troubling me all week. Last sunday a new club member came to the lake for the first time with a brand new Kyosho Oracle yacht. He is a beginner in the hobby and quite difficult to talk to. He was sailing his yacht in light airs and allowed it to get in the lee of the trees on the far side of the lake. He couldn't control it and was advised to go to the other side of the lake and recover it. Suffice to say he couldn't find it! An exhaustive search was carried out by 2-3 other club members and no trace was found. The boat was not near any obstacle in the water as far as we could determine and it was not blown into the reeds.

As I said the weather was calm, the water was flat but the only conclusion we can come to is that it must have sank. The water is too deep to wade so we cannot confirm this.

I would like to know whether anybody has any experience of this yacht? Has it got a drain plug for instance? How is it sealed? Any theories gratefully received. We don't believe there are any monster fish in the lake ;)

As for now it remains a mystery and the first boat we have lost in nearly 3 years of sailing the water :(

Cheers

Could someone have stolen it?

Highly unlikely. The far side of the lake is a golf course, separated from the lake by a screen of trees. We saw no people on the course at that time. Further, the edge of the lake on that side is too shallow for a keeled yacht to get really close, so you would have to get your feet wet. Thus not really an opportunity for someone to nip out of the trees and pinch it.

Thanks for your input anyway.

could it be a possibility that the keel decided the yacht came out the wrong mould and wanted to become a submarine.

just a thought that the keel could have been faulty and let water in thus causing it to sink "vanish without a trace".

i have lost a prop and shaft to a suspect koi, the missus thinks it was a snappy turtle but never under estimate fish.

Doug,

I would think by your description of the events that it would be more likely to have sunk, as suggested a leak through the keel, or maybe it run aground and the keel was driven through the hull, seems to be quite strange...

I have the same boat, biggest problem are the hatches were water can get into the hull. Best thing to do is to cover the hatches with some tape before sailing it. To late now i guess...

Have you asked you rlocal sub-aqua club if they could look for it, or the  Police Diving unit if they would like to conduct one of their training exercises to see if they couldfind it?
