Large Scale Steam: advice wanted on choice of model
« on: September 24, 2006, 08:31:17 am »

I want to build a scale or semi scale, steam driven, large (1000 -1200mm or so) boat with character. I was considering Sir Kay or Sir Lancelot but the consensus on here seems to be that both are top heavy. It would be nice to be able for me and my 12 year old to enter steering competitions so top heavy seems unsuitable, however interesting the photos look.
Dean's SY Komet looks interesting. Anyone experienced this with steam ???
Any suggestions or advice gladly welcomed ;D.
I am sure that on a forum like this no one is slow coming forward with acquired wisdom, so come on guys :D.

Have you considered Model Slipway's Envoy tug? I built the military version and powered it with an electric motor, but I've seen a very nice civilian version (Englishman) with a SVS steam plant installed. Certainly isn't top heavy but it's not a model for a first build.

Hi, I think that the Deans SY Komet is a wonderful kit (would love one, but have far too much on at the moment!) I had a good long look (drool) at Dean's own finished model when i was down there earlier this month - and also the one on the Peterborough Area Model boat club stand which i'm virtually certain had a steam plant in it?

http://www.pambc.org.uk/ is their website I think - drop them or Johnathan at Deans an email - [email protected]

Whatever you build, watch out for the weight and where it is!

Depending on the plant used, you will probably find that you need to displace about 20-25lbs. Narrow hulls can be a bit tender 'cos the weight in a boiler/engine is not as low down as would be with a battery/electric combination. Also, you need to plan the fore/aft location carefully to allow (a) the funnel to come out at the right point and (b) allow you to get the main 'lumps' distributed.
Once you've done that it's great fun in steam but you MUST plan ahead.

Best of luck

Correct website but the Komet was electric powered and has now been sold on.
