Motors & Batteries
« on: November 05, 2007, 10:13:58 am »

 :) :)Hello Again,
Now, I have just completed my first R/C boat  a Clyde Puffer. I am now building a model of an Offshore Supply Vessel the plan of which appeared in the Model Boat Magazine just recently.
Whilst my local  Model Shop informed me the size of Motor and the Battery, is there any rule of thumb to decide what size is related to what power as if I was to purchase the kit On-line. Or do you just think "that's about right" then cross your fingers.
I would appreciate any views/remarks on this. Thanks in advance Bernard.

Hi,

Not an answer to your questions, but a question for you - which mag issue did you get the plans from? I want to build one of those, but a shortage of plans is a problem.

Thanks

Ian

Hi,
There are a number of factors you have to take in to consideration when choosing a motor for a particular model. With a kit this has usually been worked out for the builder and a motor, speed controller and power battery will usually be reccomended by the manufacturer of the kit.
Sometimes the model boat mags do a review of the model that they are supplying a plan for which can include information of the type of motor etc what would be suitable.
With out the relavant information about a particular model IE: size and type of hull, Displacement, size of propeller/s to be used, it is difficult for any one to give you the information you require.
Unless of course they have built that particular model.
Regards Gary.

So you are interested in building an offshore supply vessel from scratch? For some alternatives look at Akers Marine site  http://www.akeryardsmarine.com/ship_osv.html. Click on the Adobe logos for detailed description of a number of vessels and go to the second page for plans. Amazing site, if used only for inspiration!

Oh CERES/Bernard, long gone are the days we remember when the choice was either a Mighty Midget or a
Taycol Double Marine.  The only question in my local model shop was 'Plain or Nitrated?' (Frog 500 was about the
only GLOW motor) On a similar thread on this Forum, the question arose for an equivalent for a specific manufacturers
motor. There was a slight complaint that a supplier didn't seem interested in obtaining this unit although they were
an agent for the requested manufacturers alternate item, -  but HIS main business wasn't boats. One can only
congratulate todays REMAINING Model shops for having the spheroids to stay in or enter such a splintered market.
Due to the instancey of the thing I a writing with a lot of damage can be done by some shop not having a 'Left
handed three and a quarter whim wham' at twenty five past three on a Sunday afternoon! While the big manufacturers
will clearly sell their own power units and clearly print the information on the plan, and designers of MOST plans will
recommend something suitable, their are some plans which are only LINE drawings and thereby lies the problem.
To try to cover ALL combinations of Motors/ESC's/Batteries is going to take a VERY brave person OR a lunatic.
Just to show a simple example, the method of determining the pitch required for the COMMERCIAL brass props
we used to use was with a pair of PLIERS, by 'Tweaking the blades' - look at the vast range the PropShop (NO
connection) carry.   This reply is NOT a whinge or a grouse but a thanks from a customer who DOES understand
both sides of the problem, and is in NO way trying to Belittle you question Bernard.

O0 O0Many thanks for information. First of all I must correct a statement I made in that the model appeared recently. Having just checked the Magazine again it is actually December 2005. I apologies for that mistake.
With regards to your question "Boatmadman" I do have a spare copy of the plan although it is only in A3 size therefore if you want it Email me your address and I will cellotape it  together .If you cannot locate a copy of the write-up I can probably copy the pages and include it as well. Bernard. ;) ;)
PS. Got the description wrong too. It is an Oil Rig Support Vessel.
