Hey, cut that out. I didn't/wouldn't kiss Martin! I am far too busy kissing all the women I meet.

The etiquette of greeting friends in this part of France is very complicated. Ladies you know, receive one kiss on each cheek; those with whom you are on closer terms, receive three (but don't ask me where the transition point is) and good friends, get 4 kisses. Trouble is you have to kiss the ugly ones as well.

Men shake hands unless it is the garage mechanic (oily hands) or the fishmonger (ugh!) and they proffer an elbow or wrist to be squeezed. It is very bad form to get it wrong. Oh yes, and a "Bonjour messieurs, mesdames" and "Aurevoir messieurs, mesdames" must be cast to the wind as you enter and leave a shop or come to within less than 5 meters of anyone on the street.

I like to think these niceties are a sign of a cultured nation which still has tome for social interaction and respect for each other.

One thing I have never worked out with all these Continental sloppy goings on is which cheek first ? I have got it wrong a few times with some interesting results (we are still talking about the face here  ::) ) where we have met in the middle. Now this is fine if the person opposite is an attractive member of the opposite sex, but on occasion I have been met with smackers on the cheeks from very macho Greek Cypriot gentlemen, complete with beards - and the importance of getting it right then is to say the least important ! :D (Hello sailor as they say  ::) )

I got in trouble once while visiting a company in London's theatre district ( Shaftsbury Ave ).
I walked in the door and made a jovial "Kiss, kiss darling!" to no one in particular.... they put a complaint in to my manager!

...where can I get a   "I'm not really effeminate" or "I don't have a feminine persona!" tee shirt in time for Saturday?

I have heard of kissing a--e but twice on each cheek. No wonder none Brits get confused with our lingo.
