Footski

I'm curious to know why you're building a static  model. A little geared 140 motor and a 2-channel radio would get lost inside there (even at 650mm long), and you could always take 'em out again once you've got bored sailing her.

FLJ

Dave,

The model is not for me but the owner of the Narrow Boat who wants a display model only. Now if he decides otherwise, then RC it will be.

As for going off topic, don't worry about it lads and lasses, it makes for good reading.. :-)) :-))

Aha! Question answered. M Jacquet now fully informed and happily on his way to the workshop to build some more flaming ESCs..................

Dan,

I think those are a bit big for UK narrow boats, but the general arrangement is fine. Thanks for taking the trouble. I am hoping to get started on this model at the end of March...

Footski,  I don`t know if you need any more info/photos, but my son and I have a 48 ins scratch built narrow boat which is based on the plans for a `real` one.   Let me know if you need photos.   Pete M

Pete,

I have plenty of detail for above deck. It is below the waterline I am a little short. Thanks for the offer..

Hi Footski, I have had several holidays on narrow boats and after some small calamities on an early one, I found out about the rudder.  You can just see in the underside picture of the model that the rudder has a round part on the top with a hole in it.

This crescent shaped part should be high enough to prevent the rudder from turning under the hull.  Rudders tend to be quite long and not very deep, so if it can turn back and under the boat, it will hit the propeller.  I have heard this noise and do not recommend it as an exercise!

The shape of the rudder stem has a purpose, it snakes up to the stern and then at the point above the rudder stock it stops.  It is here that the round section tiller is slid into place.  When the boat is closed down for the night the tiller is taken below which makes it extremely difficult to operate the rudder, it is a simple but effective security device.

best of luck Roy

In which case Pete I would appreciate it if you could post a few pictures of the general hull arrangements..

Footski,

Building two boats is as easy as building one, you just cut twice as many parts, practice on the first and keep the second once you have figured out all of the problems. O0
