I really like Bobs brass tube with teeth, think about it, it will follow the prop tube faithfully, no wandering off, brilliant,  I suppose you could fit it into a slow reving drill. Is it possible to harden brass?

I havent used it in a drill as there is no way to get rid of the swarf, but dont take long by hand especially if you solder a "T" tandle on it.
As I said it has worked for me several times.

Definitely go your way Bob, once I have finished my Missouri and I can get onto the (ebay) Bismarck, from which
I have already thrown away the deck,  plastic propeller(1),  tinplate rudder(1),  and dug out all the plastic foam from the stern.
Actually there was a crude rudder linkage, but like the prop tube, it only came halfway to the access in the deck, which had been  firmly glued down.
Seems strange for someone to have paid for a very nice Fleetscale hull, and started with such a botched job  - 'yes' I have now got three shafts & two rudders waiting to go in!

I know this is getting ahead of the subject but when fitting the new shaft and tube why not find a piece of larger tubing which is a sliding fit on the shaft tube. Epoxy the outer tube into place in the hull, then slide in the shaft tube with a smear of silicone to give a watertight seal between the two. If you ever need to remove the shaft and tube, it should come out with a good tug and leave the outer tube in place. Makes removal a lot easier than grinding, cutting or reaming the shaft and tube from the hull. (Richard would appreciate that.) I don't claim to have invented this idea - just saw it elsewhere although I can't remember where...

I have to remove another 2 shafts from a plank-on-Frame hull over this winter.
The new running gear has been ordered from G. Sitek and I will be using the brass tube method again.
It might not be the quickest method, but for me it is the safest.

Quote "I'm reluctant to start grinding the existing shaft out as the surrounding material will certainly be softer than the brass tube and the chances of me slipping with my Dremel and damaging the hull are significant?"

Use Bob's brass tube method and the set-up is self-guiding.
