crab boat conversion project
« on: November 23, 2008, 02:56:25 pm »

i have been a big fan of the TV series deadliest catch, i've had an idea to build an RC model and convert it to a red crab fishing vessel. now...i don't think i will have a problem getting the cranes or building the other equipment from scratch..BUT i do have a problem as to what model kit to use and i know i am not at the skill stage of scratch building an entire boat!!
i have seen the model slipways AZIZ..  that is a possible option. Does anyone have any ideas as to which kits would be suitable. I have had a look on t' internet but not found anything else. I'm looking for about 1/48 scale.

What are your opinions on the whole idea of converting a boat like this?... think i might find it very difficult..which is why i like the idea O0

Hy Toptugger
As an ex comercial fisherman and tug man, I have also enjoyed the series The Deadliest Catch, and have toyed with the same idea as you, ie makeing up a model of one of those crab boats. The Azis wouldnt take a lot of modification, and would probably look realy good once done. I say go for it, and keep us posted on the forum with plenty of pics ect as I dont know of anyone who has done this type of model. (probably be proved wrong on that )

Hello!
Very interesting idea, will follow with great interest. Check out HFM-marines ORSV. I have built one and it's a much cheaper ABS choice to play around with, at least for a first attempt?
Good luck whatever you do, but please do it!

The Russians ( and some of the US ones ) are converted OSV's. So most of the work would be leaving off the OSV winches aft side of the superstructure , fabricating the hauler and deck equipment and fitting a crane to the portside ( along with making loads of pots lol ).
There is a photo of one ex-osv converted like this on the Shipspotting website but there seach only works if you know the name or IMO number so I can't find it just now

:-)) The more i think about this, the more it excited i get about it. :} i looks like the aziz will have to be the boat for the job, building the basic model and then adapting it. there is a lot of work involved going on the pics of the aziz i have seen, almost all of which will have to be carried out on the rear deck. i can probably use the crane supplied but i can't find another crane for it, mainly because the main deck crane used on red crab F/V's is quite large... so guess i'll have to make one, that will be one of many challenges!!!

one thing that is certain is i will have to gather a lot of info on this project before i shell out a lot of money on this model, i have to be 100% sure that i can do this conversion. The biggest part of which will be sitting in front of the TV watching deadliest catch, camera in hand gathering pics of the rear decks... where's them dorito's!! {-)

If anyone has info on where i can get a 1:50/1:48 scale crane that would fit the job let me know.. i'm guessing it might have to come from another disipline other than boats.... actually...might be able to use a 1:32 scale crane, that might overcome the size problem!!

guess i will have to build the new yorkshireman in the back end of 2009 instead of being my next project ...  {-)

just a quick update on the project

Had some luck surfing the net, managed to trip over a company that makes the gear for king crab boat. It has pictures of the gear and dimensions!!! :-)) happy days!!... so i'm now drawing up the plans for the pots, pot launcher, block, coiler and sorting table in 1:50 scale.

still having problems finding any info on the cranes they use..if i have to fly to dutch harbour and measure them in person i will!!!! >>:-(
The other option is to record deadliest catch and fish through the episodes (excuse the terrible pun) to work put the dimensions.

The other big development is that i may not be using the aziz as the doner boat.

it looks a bit large coming in at about 165 feet. The other option is the 4 or 10 hatch coaster by model slipway.

Coming in at about 150 feet. Not a lot i know, but the layout of the boat seems more suited to a F/V.

just got the model slipway 10 hatch coaster and the 5T 1:32 crane.

The plans are drawn up to make the pots from wire and mesh, soldering the frame together and then glueing on the mesh, i then need to tie on string for the door end and put rope and buoys inside each one. having trouble trying to find something to use as a buoy...but i'll find something. {:-{

the crane is built now but may be to short so i might have to modify it to make it a bit higher, it will be getting its first coat of paint soon...this will be red oxide which makes weathering easier after the top coat has gone on.

As far as the hull is concerned i am waiting on some info about the RC installation and then i shall build the deck with a wooden support structure. i will start posting pictures as soon as i can, but not alot to see at the moment.

I have been getting in from work and watching an episode of deadliest catch everyday with my camera in hand to try and get some research pictures. i'm getting quite a good library building up but there is still loads of stuff to find out. :-)
