Fishing Boat fenders

Anyone got any ideas for making fenders of the "pear-shaped" variety ?

I was thinking of maybe using a marble or lead-shot, cover with appropriate colour of heat-shrink then harden the sharp end off to drill a hole through to accept the cordage.

Hy Capt Podge
I dont know if you have a Hobby Craft shop near you, but they sell balls made of wood or styrene, in various sizes, the ones on my scratch built fishing boat are the wood type drilled with a 1/8 bit, then I pushed a split pin into the hole leaving it sticking out about 3/8 to half inch, and finished off the neck with Das clay that goes hard when set. Then I painted the ball red and the neck blue. I will post some pics tommorrow if you want to see them

Hey Bosun,

That sounds like a good'n. Never thought about using a split-pin.
Yes please to the photos.
I've never heard of Das clay - I'll make some enquiries in local stores - and thanks for the info :-))

Hy Guys
Here are the pics, they are a little blurry, but I think you will get the general idea. The balls are made of wood, aprox 1,inch round but you can get other sizes, and also in  polystyrene, you can use Easylight/ Plastic Padding for the neck, and the loop at the top is 1/8 split pin. The boat is a bit dusty as its on the shelf in the workshop.
Hope this helps.

They're only used as fenders in the small boats guys , those are pot or net marker bouys. Some small boats put them over the side from time to time.. The vast amount of UK fishing boats just use old car or small lorry tires with a rope through the top of them as the bouys are very expensive and would be fairly easy to burst between 2 boats larger than around the 30ft mark.

Now at sea the tires are lifted back over the top rails and secured

For a model based on anything smaller than 36-40ft real size the buoys would be ok as there are quite a few boats using them at that size ( but mostly those real boats are almost all GRP ones as wood and steel boats are a lot heavier ).

When the bigger boats take the tires back onboard they normally lift them over the top rail ( leaving the rope outside tied to the bottom of the stanchion ) and are tied using the rope to the middle horizontal rail. A few of the new boats unhitch the ropes and tie all of the tires up near the bow out of the way of the wires and gear though so for modelings sakes there isn't really that much to go wrong.

If anyone is building a model of a boat bigger than 110ft ( Large whitefish trawlers , search for Viking Monarch or Atlantic Challenge for an example as these are 40m long ) they don't carry fenders at all as all of the ports they use have extensive quay side fenders ( very large tractor tires ) chained to the quay. The largest boats in the fleet , the big pelagic boats over 40m , use a tube shaped fender ( one forrard of midships one on the quarter ) of around 15ft in length and 6-8ft in diameter over both sides.

Hy Davie
I agree with you that the larger vessels would indeed use tyres as fenders, I posted my reply to the question about fenders of the pear shaped variety, hence the pics of that sort. On my Boston Typhoon and my Peggy I have used tyres. The model of the boat in the pics is based on a 26ft crabber type boat, and she was berthed in a river on a swinging mooring. she had no need for the tyre type fenders as the only thing that came alongside was a 16ft Plymouth pilot that was used to ferry myself and my Mrs back and forth. The fenders also came in handy as pot markers.  Great photo,s on your site, looked at them many times.
