Opening of boating pond in NZ
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:34:56 am »

Sunday 8th Feb 2009 saw the latest model boat pond to be officilaly opened in Cambridge New Zealand. After 3 years of work and persistant pressure on the small local council the old arm of the lake wa opened by the Mayor. From a tree blocked and over grown state, it has been dredged and edged to provide a splendid sailing area. Apart from the usual wildlife that flies in it is a very sizable pond and will very easily accept models of all sizes from the smallest tug upto the largets battleships. The day could not have been any better, a slight breeze and the temp in the mid 20's, andwith the wonderful support from a turn out of modellers from all over the North Island with over an estimated 50 models on show. Many thanks to Stewart and Rob of Cambridge who made this happen.

Part of the model line up.

The line up from the other end.

1/96 Destroyer alongside some work boats.

A couple of liners made an appearance.

My 1/96 Deans destroyer along with a fine scratched built model.

1/48 Leander Frigate.

New Zealands new Inshore Patrol Craft.

1/96 scale Destroyer alongside the South Dakota

Thanks to all who made this day possible,  Adrian.

That looks really nice Adrian!
I'm pleased to hear that new venues are available around our little patch of the world.

Did you have much to do with it yourself?

Does the local club had a events calendar available somewhere? Cambridge isn't too far away...

No I did not have anything to do with it apart from turning up on the day.
Have gotten involved with with the Cambridge guys from my involvementat their Armistice displays in November. Have attended 3 of them now.
As for a club it was mention that they have no President, Secretary etc. Just a phone and email  list and when a sail is needed they just ring around and it is organised.  The best way I feel.
If you wish to  pass on my email I will add you to my list of contacts and notify you to their dates as they come up. there is no set plan at this stage. Possibly once a month was mentioned but who knows yet. Its early days still.

Some photos of the lake will be forth comming.

Hi Ian,

a few years ago now I did visit the Panmure location and had a chat with the members at the time. Unfortunately work intervened and then children happened along.
I shall have to pay another visit I think.
How welcome would a PT boat be? As I recall the waters at Panmure were not overly large.

Hi Bill D.
That is for sure way too small. Unfortunitly also is the council made it a condition that no IC boats allowed. We had some steam powered tugs etc there on the day. They are not noisey nor fast so Ok. A bit of a pitty as if no others using the pond I see no reason except fo the noise. As the council spent all the money to upgrade the pond It is their right to dictate the terms of use. Your boat would give the ducks something to think about though.
Cheers, Adrian.
