help with tid tug please
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:02:08 pm »

hello to you all from a newbie.

I am looking for some help, am about to begin a scratch build tid tug from a lines and GA drawing. I've got three questions, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated:

1) what thickness should the hull sections be and what is the rule for this, if any?
2) when I look at the drawing, the section detail seems to show that the deck slopes from starboard to centre and port to centre but the pictures on the build sites seem to indicate that it's flat. which is right?
3) on the plan, the hull section above the deck line seems to come back on itself - I think, forming support for the bulwark - but when I look at the sections they don't seem to look the same size. Is there something I'm not understanding here?

Thanks heaps.

Hi, Guitarman

The thickness of your frames/bulkheads really depends on the amount of them and the spacing along the keel, as a rule of thumb i normally use 4 or 6mm birch plywood for my frames.

If i remember correctly a TID tug had a camber ( curvature ) to the deck, this is designed to shed water off the deck. Is this what you mean by the deck sloping off to both port and starboard from the centre line? if so then this can be easily done either including the correct curved profile from the top of your frame or adding separate curved deck beams on top and between the frames.

As for the other question, i think you could be referring to the top of the bulwark ( capping rail ) being inside the deck line on the plan view? If so it was normal to have a slope inwards from the base ( deck edge )to the top of the bulwark ( capping rail ) this is quite easy to reproduce. Build your hull up to deck level and add the bulwarks and supports after, you will need to cut card templates to get the correct shape and symmetry and once you have got the shape about right, just cut them from thin plywood and glue into position.

I hope this helps or i have not gone off in the wrong direction and misunderstood your questions.

Regards

Ian

You may find this thread helpful. I know Gerry would be more than happy to answer any questions on TID's.
