Boiler size?
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:07:53 am »

I'm building Caldercrafts Imara and I'm planning to use 2 Graham industries TVR1A with 75 mm props (maybe to big ?)
For lubrication I have used 2 lubricators from Mainsteam models.
My question are , what size on the boiler, I'm going to use?
I have looked at Maccsteam boilers 3,5" or 4" size
I'm a beginner in steam, so I need some help please.

Contact mac steam and take there advice they acutely have or had a couple of them engines on ebay recently so they will know about them..cheddar did a lengthened  Proteus boiler for two Gemini's also try  http://www.cheddarvalleysteam.co.uk/ as he made them for cheddar when cheddar sold the Graham industries engines IT needs to be able to make a lot of steam so you will need a pump as well

About the size of the boiler, I can't tell you anything. But I can certainly recommend Maccsteam. I ordered one of his boiler with fittings and gastank, I was astonished about the quality and workmanship and all that at a nice price (especially at this moment considering the ratio £ - €). Very very nice man too.
Succes, cheers, A!H.

I would use a Maccsteam 4 inch diameter horizontal boiler if you can squeeze it in. Plenty of steam - better to have too much than too little - !

Your choice of props might be a little on the large size. I have not tried my Graham Ind twin yet but I have been running a single cylinder for some time and it worked well with both a 55mm and a 60mm prop. The idea is to use as big a prop as you can get away with as this loads the engine up and reduces the steam consumption but to turn really big props you need higher pressures and Graham only reccomend that you run at 30 to 35 psi. If you stick to this I would say try 65mm props or bump the pressure up a little more and run 70mm. Of course a lot depends too on number of blades and pitch. I like four blade props with plenty of blade area and plenty of pitch but it will be interesting to see what others think. Good luck and keep us posted as you build her. Ian.
