Very very new.
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:36:51 pm »

Hi all,
I've wandered through the site and thought as you all seem a helpful bunch I'd better join.

I noticed a few, like myself, suffer from c.o.p.d. I'm fairly lucky, and have got a good amount of control over it now, but like the others, I have to be careful with certain glues and paints. I suppose if you repair and respray cars for 30 odd years, it's bound to take its toll.  Still, enough of that.

I've always built models, mostly aircraft, display and R.C.   In the 1980's-'90's I flew full size aircraft for pleasure. I would now like to build one or two boats, and as I sailed on the Braemar and Kenya Castle ships, amongst others, after leaving school, I  thought I'd like to build one of those.
My question is, does anyone know how and where I might get plans/drawings for them?
By the way, I looked at the posts for Union Castle colours, and agree with the Dulux 'Gentle Lavender' suggested by Colin Bishop. Any more pink than that for a model would be too much, but that's from memory, and there's precious little of that left!  Photos' can be very deceiving where colour is concerned.
Sorry to have gone on.

Getting hold of plans can be difficult. Just about all the traditional shipyards have now closed down. In some cases documents have been lost while in others they have ended up in a nearby museum. Both Braemar and Kenya Castle were built by Harland And Wolff who are still in existence so I reckon they would be the first place to try: http://www.harland-wolff.com/contacts.asp

Nice to hear from you Jeff.  Don't worry about going on, we all do that at some time or another on here.  Colin is indeed very knowlegeable on old cruise liners particularly and if you ever have a question on such vessels he is almost certainly going to be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the welcome Colin and Bunkerbarge. I'll just have to keep looking, though of course I will take your advice Colin and check out H and W.

hi jeff,
if you look on the web site of www.shipsnostalgia.com  and find a member on there called TMAC he might be able to help you, as he either still does or worked for Harland and Wolff for some considerable uyears.
he might have access to what you want.
good luck and happy sailing. neil, :-))
