Are.. but the definition of an initial ism says that the letters are pronounced separately and I've never heard of anyone saying LASER as separate letters.

I think I'll give up now and go back to bed !!

Just because it is possible to pronounce a string of initial letters as a word does not prevent that "word" being spelt out, so the examples given are quite legitimately both.
English is such a great language for creating acronyms - at least two words for every meaning and two meanings for every word gives great scope.  And of course we are separated from our colonial cousins by our common language and our different development and use of it.

Well I beg to differ..

But is that not what has already been explained - thrice.
You're not that particular member with a multitude of identities by any chance, are you?

Poor old Tug Kenny. He started a good thread and now we've ripped it to bits.
Sorry, Ken.

A boat is moored up and the tide is coming in. Over the side is a ladder with the rungs spaced 1 ft apart.
At 3pm 2 rungs are below water and 7 are showing.
If the tide rises at 2 feet per hour, how many rungs are showing at 5pm.

It's 1930, A train pulls out of the station in Scotland and travels south, it manages to reach a speed of 65 mile per hour. There is a wind blowing from the south at a constant speed of 15 mile per hour, taking all  this information here is the question

what direction does the steam go?

Last from me for a while.

A team of chaps are sent out on a job to dig a hole, along with them went time and motions.

It was found that the team of 5 men could dig 5 holes in 10 hours.
then it was found that a team of 10 men could dig 5 holes in 5 hours
then it was found that 2 men could dig 2 holes in 2 hours

given the clues how long would it take 1 man to dig half a hole?

R,

PS: well done Brian Roberts
