Gas pressure adjustment valve - experiences?
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:27:19 pm »

Hello!

I'm thinking about buying a gas pressure adjustment valve. Before purchase I'd like to know what the opinions are about the several models available. I have seen models with a single membrane and models with two membranes. not sure what the practical difference is.
Prices also vary from 50 to 120 Euro.

So what would you recommend and why?

I've not tried one of the mechanical type up to now.  I have two of the Cheddar electronic ones.    It looks quite neat - shame about the slot head screws but that's easily fixed.

The Anton unit is the nicest so far.

I kinda like that BIX/Forrest Classics unit too. Would look better with some paint on it. Anyone used it so far?

The Hielscher unit looks very rough, I wouldn't want to spend money on it.

I have head favourable comments about this one made by Keifler in Germany, but I think it's a bit big and ugly.

It reaally looks the part Bernhard.   I could look at pics of the way you "dress" your launches for hours  :-)

BTW where do you get the very neat cast elbows etc.?  They're so much neater than nutted compression fittings.

Cheers

I think it's worth pointing out here that there are two quite different types of gas valves, each with a very different purpose.

The first type is a regulating valve and it does the simple job of ensuring a constant outlet pressure from a gas tank that could be varying in internal pressure due to ambient temperature, burner demand etc. This type of valve will have a knurled knob on it to set the required pressure which it will then regulate to, as long as the pressure in the tank is above that of the set point.

The second type of gas valve is more of a control valve and includes the attenuator types.  This valve is designed to control the amount of gas going to the burner depending on the pressure in the boiler.  This valve is invaluable in preserving gas and guarranteeing that the boiler pressure remains constant irrespective of the engine use.

In my set up below the first valve at the top is a pressure regulating valve which should give a constant regulated pressure to the control valve, which is the second one.  This is an electronic type of gas control valve, operated by a sensor fitted to the boiler, then via a control unit and a micro servo to switch the valve from a pilot setting to full burner depending on boiler pressure.

I have actually been playing with this set up only this evening and it seems to work very well.  I still need to see how it behaves using the on board gas tank as opposed to an external tank and whether the heat I am putting into the gas tank from the seperator is too much.
