Nor more kits from George Turner
« on: March 08, 2009, 11:27:52 pm »

My wife and I were at the Ellesmere Port Show yesterday and today, and spent a while talking to the ever amiable George Turner. To my surprise he said he was giving up production of his complete kits (indeed he already has done) and will concentrate on producing his figures and vacform hulls in the future.  :((

He said it was just too much work doing all the casting and putting the myriad bits together as whole kits, thus the change of direction. I've noted his web site still lists the whole range, but from what he was saying you'd be very lucky to be able to get any of them now. A big pity, but 'a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do....' I guess.

He had the last four of his RAF 'Whaleback' ASR launch kits at the show, so now one of them is sitting in my model room as I just HAD to have one example of his amazing resin casting techniques in my fleet.

It's a very sad day. He was selling off bits at the last Warwickshire boat show and I have a few hulls in "pending" pile now. I've built several of his models and really enjoyed them.

But then, as you say, a man's gotta do... It's easy to say "I wish he'd do this" when it's not you paying the bills.

A real shame, Georges kits were excellent, mind you so are his figures.

Having opened up the ASR kit I'm astonished at the level of the resin casting George produces!  :-))

My main modelling activity is 1/72 plastic aircraft and I'm well used to the type of resin work that's employed there. The level of detail that George has supplied on the ASR casting knocks 80% of the aircraft resins into a cocked hat! The 20 mm Oerlikon on the stern is fantastic, so good I'll probably  build it first, just so I can sit and marvel at it. :)

My boat building programme will have a major change of emphasis now I expect. I'll have to look up some stuff on ASRs.........

Hi Kit,

Thank you for your earlier post,
I was able to purchase one of the RAF 'Whaleback' ASR Launches from George this afternoon.
Will you be posting a build thread? ( yes please please)
How about some pics?

Thanks again

Dale.

Dale,

In the best of all possible worlds, my answer would be yes, but..............

At my rate of building, not to mention all the other stuff I have going at the moment it could be a LOOOOOOOOOONG thread! Having said that, the Oerlikon bits are laid out on my cutting mat and have been all afternoon!  ok2

It's nice you got one of them too. do your impressions of the kit match mine?

 Hi Kit,

I bought mine over the phone today after reading your comments.
I had been looking at the 'Wheelback' ASR on the website last week and had been reading about the quality of George's work and had it in my mind for a future build but I had no idea he was stopping the kit's until your post this morning.

Therefore I grabbed one while I could without seeing what's in the box.....hence why a asked for a photo.

Hopefully it should arrive by the end of the week......quite excited now!!

Please let us know how you get on.

Dale,

Ahah, well you're in for a treat, I think so anyway.

Here's most of the kit, some of the bits still in their plastic bags as there are zillions of them, but the largest resin bits I've laid out. The hull, deck and battery tray are vacforms of course, and quite a complex shape because of the curved deck edge shape. There's some decals and an RAF flag by BECC, a piece of clear sheet for the windows and ports, and the long black strips are the spray and deck rails. There's also an etch fret for the rails, gun bits and pieces etc. There's a plan and instructions of course, but they are too big to get in the shot.

I already had the 20 mm out on my bench so it has it's own photo.

I've started a build thread on the ASR launch, starting with the 20 mm cannon of course.  :-)

I expect the rest will follow in due course, but it may go on for a considerable time, sad to say.
