Motor/Propshaft drive coupling
« on: March 30, 2009, 12:36:19 pm »

Hi All, I am looking for a very small (short) motor/propshaft coupling like the ones I have seen in the Smasher destroyer. It has a ball with cross pin on one end and a socket with slot on the other. Anybody got an idea where I might find one. Thanks, Graham.

I  bought two similar yellow plasatic ones at the Blackpool show two years ago ( not last October2008) from a gent and wife team.
Their stall was a big one with all things motors, shafts, props on a display board, glues knives etc, but I don't know their name.
They were on the opposite wall near the back archways, to metcalf mouldings as you come into the entrance to the hall, ( but sadly I can't remember the name of the vendors)
If anyone can understand my directions they may be able to give you the name of the trader.

If you don't have any luck finding those couplngs, you can always try one of these, I can do any thread/motor shaft diameter and you can make them as short as you want (within reason!!!) for £5.00 each including uk P&P

Thanks all for that very rapid response and very useful information. I will probably get some Deans Marine first and measure up for the bespoke one from 'no mustang mark' after. I always like to have two stings for the bow. Cheers Graham.

Hi all, Well I have been in touch with Dean's Marine and it seems that the small plastic coupling will not take the motor shaft size that I have.  <:( There is another option but I have to get back to them with some dimensions.  O0 So this evening I have been having a bit of a play around with all the bits and pieces. I made a rough solid dummy coupling and have come to the conclusion that the final coupling can be 20mm long (maximum), 15mm would be better x 10mm diameter. The motor shaft is 3.17mm diameter and the prop shaft is 2mm diameter. Do you think one of your drive couplings 'no mustang mark' could be squeezed in? Cheers Graham.

Hi Mark, Fantastic service. :-)) the coupling arrived today. :-) As you can see I have not made the motor mount yet but I can already see it that it will fit beautifully in the space.  :}I will probably use the heavier rubber in use so thanks for sending it. I will post payment tomorrow. Many thanks. Graham.

Hi Mark (Craftysod). Yes I will post some more pictures but I have been avoiding it as the planking did not go too well and at one point the whole thing was close to going in the bin as I was too ashamed of the finish. :embarrassed: The second mahogany planking is a very thin veneer and tested my skills and patience. I have done some more work on it so it looks a bit better. There are some early pictures under the thread 'is anybody building anything at the moment' and the boat is the Mantua Mincio. The motor is an outrunner 1100rpm/volt. It is a bit of an experiment as I did not like the look of what was supplied, small pm brushed motor, two pulleys and a rubber band. I read on a website somewhere that it did not perform very well so decided, at the start, to do something different and hopefully better. Time will tell whether I wasted my money or not as what I am putting in cost nearly as much as the kit. I will check the size and make of motor tonight at home. Mark (no mustang mark). Hopefully I will not be asking for anything smaller but you never know I have seen some very neat small boats at my club. Cheers Graham.

Hi Mark, The motor is a Fusion FS 2815/24 made in China by logic. The packing says the website is www.logicrc.com. I spent some time this evening making a motor mount which is nearly fitted but still needs a bit of adjustment as does the propsaft length. It is getting there slowly. Here are a couple of pictures of the boat which still needs the stern planking done and all the fittings put on after the final coats of varnish have been applied. Cheers Graham.

Hi All, Unfortunately the superb little coulping from Mark still proved to be bitstiff for my little 2mm propshaft so I have put it to one side for use on another project. in the meantime I raided my son's old pile of technical lego where I found some small universal joints. I managed to modify one and am hoping it is strong enough for the maiden run on Sunday. Cheers, Graham.
