X-CRAFT
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:14:51 pm »

sorted out my drawings, based on John Lamberts excellent sheets. transfered them to the doors of an old fitted wardrobe and stuck them all together.
But i dint want to do that so i threw them away and started again. this time i used 10mm balsa as the frames and covered them in thin ply to get the cones. totally ignoring the fact that the front cone wasnt a cone. sure it tapered but in a arc. so the shape was transfered to papaer and then dived in to 10mm sections. these gave me the circles diameter to create the shape. these were cut out, cut in half and glued together. then shaped with my trusty perma grit. the whole thing was then glued to the half hull. job done.
the whole thing, once i am happy with the shape and got the top and bottom to match, not tried them yet, will be coverd in resin and thin cloth, cleaned up and used as a plug to mould the actualy floating, sinking hull.

The moulds have been cleaned up and fixed up by Models by Design and now look a lot better than before. The ones shown on the SubPirates site show the details are crisp and the fit is good ( unlike the old S class which had problems with hull warping )

here are a couple of pics of my X-Craft about 12yrs old now, based on an old Darnell hull i obtained second hand and threw the internals away but modified and with a scratch built clear acrylic module, she works well and is in regular use at our pond. O0

Yes, but can't advertise here.    I am making this model myself, and have a lot of photos and data on it.  Darnell got the hatches in the wrong place, Kemps drawings and the Museum exhibit both prove this. There are a few points that Kemp got wrong too - but all easily fixed.
The rear assembly on this model is really way off and I have made new molds of the horizontal fins to give them a more 'chicken leg' appearance. Also, Darnell put internal curves on the vertical fins, and they are actually quite squared off. I intend this model to run with a Snort system, on a 4 channel radio. No forward planes should make this an easy boat for a beginner.

A pdf file of my build with lots of photos is available if you pm me.

  Same as that Martin...

I built one of the original John Darnell X'craft kits years ago, still got the photos of it hanging on my lounge wall, I also have a pic of it on the rear planes of the X'craft in the museum at Portsmouth, sort of "Little & Large" thing. The guys that took those boats to war were amazingly brave men, utmost respect to all of them.

There's quite an interesting article on scratchbuilding a static model of an X-craft, 1:72 scale, with accompanying photographs, at this website:
http://www.bismarck-class.dk/shipmodels/building_articles/x_craft_benedetto/x_craft_benedetto.html
Might be of some help!
Regards, Glyn :-)
