Not welcome at Belhus Park Essex
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:43:53 pm »

Whilst visiting my friend in Essex we decided to visit the lake at the Belhus country park to sail my 10r and the 1mtr yaught,s we were NOT WELCOME.I went into the info centre to be told in no uncertain words by an employee of Essex council that no boats were allowed on the lake except when the local club which is the Grays and Thurrock Model; boat club were in attendance and if I wanted to sail I had to join the club.He was more interested in taking money from fishermen than modelers, funny as I had a quick walk around the lake and there was 1 person fishing???????The ironic thing is that in the clubs web site it has a telephone no for the club sec who NEVER answers his phone!!!!!Oh by the way if you bother to go to this so called boating lake be warned you have to Carry your boat over 1/4 mile to the water.

Hi

I don't sail yachts, but they do at my club in Essex. Not sure if my club at Brentwood would be close enough for you, but I do know that people answer the phone and are extremely helpful. You can see some pictures of the lake (car park next to the lake) & get contact details on my website:

I'm pretty new to this forum - but difficulties with clubs for newcomers seems to be an unfortunate theme (as well some advice about really good ones)

hi i recently had the same thing happen to me,i went to fairhaven lake near blackpool and was told i couldnt sail appart from in the cordened off bit for the boat club which was id say 20 yards square.i told the idiot i couldnt sail there (too small) and asked why not in the main lake which is massive and was empty.he said because of motor boats and or row boats( holliday makers) to which i said where? there were none in sight!!.he said well i cant stop you but the police can to which i said well when i see one ill see what he has to say.councills are an absolute joke only interested in making a quick buck!! fishermen that leave rubbish all over( im a fisherman by the way and im disgusted by what some leave behind) and so called holliday guests who run amock with the boats  and throwing empty beer cans all round the place!!.im damned if im going to not sail my boat in my park lake when i pay my taxes and keep the stupid moronic idiots who run these parks in a job!!!.rant over lol!!

Everybody is always welcome at Golden Valley, any day of the week, always someone sailing something, and all are very friendly, could just be a bit far to come for a sail though...

It certainly wasn't one of my members at Fairhaven who fed you that line of garbage.  The boomed off bit is actually about 50 yards long, and 30 across (I know, I've waded most of it).
The local club (Blackpool and Fylde Model Boat Club) is licenced to use that part, but is not the "owner" - we just pay for the privilege of being allowed to maintain our bits and pieces there.  The rest of the lake is open to all and sundry at all times.  Full-size sailers are suposed to pay a launching fee, or be affiliated to someone who does.  As to the hire boats - if they are out and about, you takes your chance with them, but with a decent breeze you can usually either out-run them or out-manoever them.
We have a sign there saying "Visitors and guests welcome"  We mean it.  We just hope that when visitors and guests sail there they behave themselves so that they don't bring the hobby into disrepute.

no it deffinately wasnt a member of the boat club mate it was a park worker in his van who told me if the police saw me they would fine me?.by the way the lake is great for sailing on i was enjoying it and looking forward to meeting a few members but no one showed up,weve been twice now my son tried out your end of the pond.i thought this guy was talking rubbish but he assured me it wasnt allowed please can you assure me hes either wrong or lying?.by the way i went on i believe your say so and was very pleased id taken up the offer as its the first time ive been there in ten years of living in blackpool.so let me clear this up it wasnt a boat club member just a park worker maybe hes one of these people who likes to think he has a little power and misuses it i dont know but he all but spoilt our mornings sailin as my son was scared to stay in case the police came. thats why i was annoyed at this(idiot)i knew in my mind he was talking crap but its allways in the back of your mind he could be telling the truth, you know what councills are like .one rule for them another for us etc.might see you there sometime mate .by the way i know the cordened off bit isnt 20 yards square just seems it when you have a large sail boat to manouvre lol!

Councils and their workers all too often don't know what they are talking about anyway. I recently made enquiries about our pond at Parliament Hill and was initially told i couldn't use it. After a bit of persistance of wanting a reason why and who I was talking for future reference an attiude change resulted in me being told that I could use it but had to be careful because it was "conservation" area and the wildlife was most important. As a keen coarse and sea angler, a yacht owner and all round decent bloke I don't need a jumped up, self opinionated council worker to decide for me whether I can use the facilities I am actually paying fo, or pre-judging me on my behaviourr. Why do people with a little authority seem to think that know best for the rest of us and deny us the oppotunity to make a decision based on the true facts that they should be supplying FREELY and without PREDUDICE. Whoor, glad I got rid of that.....................

conclusion........don't take the first answer given and get busibodies name and dept details....regularly puts little hitlers on their back foot............

Yes, and it's amazing how fast privately run parking attendants (pretend traffic wardens with different coloured hats but who failed the personality check for that job) vanish when a camera is pointed at them.  If they thought they were doing an honest job honestly, you would think that they would be proud of it and want copies:-)

spot on mate i totally agree i went fishing last year with my dad at a lake he uses in yorkshire where im orrigionally from, hes aacarp angler one day the girl who runs it(national trust)said all the big carp had been removed.when i said why she said oh theres a desease affecting them i said  ive not seen any ill fish? she said oh it only affects the larger ones haha i laughd so much and told her she was a having a laugh!!.an argument started to which i said bring the authoritys whoever and lets see what they have to say etc.next thing this councilor turned up and was very charming etc and swoar blind the envirement agency had checked the fish and removed them.i said your a liar mate and the bailif later told me they had not been removed but as this group of guys had been fishing for them for weeks and had given the girl a hard time, they concocted this lie to stop them or others coming back.can you beleive that? typical councilors lying cheating etc etc!!.they go on about how the place is a conservation area yet they had a pike cull there some years ago to let the other fish grow lol .its been proved having pike in allows fish to flourish as it keeps numbers down a bit and keeps desease at bay also as they eat ill or wounded fish!!.by the way i doubt these men gave her any trouble this girl(woman) is such a pain in the bum to be honest .another power crazed little nobody with a uniform you could say.shed make a good traffic warden lol!!!.

I work in Cirencester next to the second largest body of water outside the lake district. when a friend of mine enquired about sailing in r/c boats he was told he couldn't due to heath and safty. But he could sail the full size version or a jetski??? there is a local model group attached to the local sailing clud which sails IOM and 10r but nothing else is allowed and there is membership fee to the 1:1 yatch club of £80 PA.

In Cirencester there is a lake behind the chirch, when my friend asked the council who owned it if he could sail on there they said officaly NO as they would have to do a risk assessment first and due to cost that wasn't going to happen. But as long as no one complains or gets injured go ahead and this conversation did not take place???????

On the subject of lovely council staff : a few years ago I was visiting Pugneys Country Park just outside Wakefield. A woman was walking along the lake shoreline with a little lad, I'm assuming her grandson. He was pulling one of those little plastic lifeboats along the waters edge. A foul creature strode down to the lake from the office block.
"GET THAT BOAT OUT OF THE WATER!" he shouted (and I mean SHOUTED!)
Ignorant scumbag!!!!!

Unfortunately you seem to get jobsworths in all walks of life. He was probably a failed parking attendant.

We do have a good relationship with most of the park staff at Fairhaven, due to years of proving that we are on their side, and do no harm.  In return they have been very helpful with making improvements to the access and ameneties there, fitting odd jobs in where they could probably have wandered off for some quality time with a large brew.  There is always one, though, who always does it by the book, even thouogh he has no knowledge of what colour the book is, or what is between the covers.  He also wonders why he has a harder time of it than his fellow workers.

I'm glad I live over here, the local council over here keeps asking us what they can do to help, and as for parking police there are not any at all, and even better there is no parking fees within fifty miles of us, so if you are all having that much trouble I fell a bit sorry for you, as most organisations now days seem to be getting worried about getting sued, political correctness crap or follow the states where you can be sued by a dog and you can lose, doesn't make sense anymore....

Hi Guys
Most of you seem to be telling tails about how bad the local council is about sailing on there water, here at Black Park just outside Slough i and the club have a fantastic relationship with the park Rangers and the county council. In the past we have been told that we could not have IC of any description but after asking the right member of staff i was able to get this ban lifted for one day a year when we have the float planes visit for our club Regatta the only other problem is they refuse to let us have buoys out as it encourages members of the public to swim which is banned.Anyway if you want to come down we will make you welcome on Thursdays PM & Sunday AM but please make your self known if you just stand there like a lemon we will think that your a member of the public oh and some of us brave souls sailed yesterday in the pouring rain or was that just condensation.
cheers

i think councils are basicaly the same everywhere you go here to be honest(bad) the local coucil painted yellow lines down our street to stop parking between 8 am and 4 .30pm suposedly to stop over crowding as a few residents were getting annoyed at people parking outside their houses.the councill instead of giving us permits decided lines were better ?.now most people cant park outside there own house through the day plus what spaces are available are taken up by the people who work in the offices a few streets away  .the very people we were fed up of in the first place and guess who they all work for??? yep the local council .they deliberatley didnt give us permits so their staff had places to park between yes you guessed it 8 and 4.30.we live in a country where our only sea rescue service is made up of volunteers and paid for by mainly charrity and donations so dont talk to me about councils helping the comunity !!.if you ask me this country is going to the dogs ,theres less and less parks and play areas for the public to use and then they wonder why kids get bored and vandalise things.the council if they had their way would tarmac over the lot to save money and make a few bob from the bloody parking metres.you go to your local park or lake and you have to pay to park .they rip us off to use these places we are allready paying to keep open in the first place !! everywhere you look theres yellow lines ,parking metres ,speed cameras not to mention traffic wardens and police hiding in the back of cars with speed guns ,why? to get even more cash from us .councils seem to be run by morons with no sence whatsoever here in blackpool as there have been a few tragic deaths due to kids or even adults drowning while walking along the sea wall
,after their dogs went swimming and got into trouble and they jumped in to save the dogs foolishly!!what was one councilors reaction? put more signs up to make people aware of the dangers? NO,more coast guard patrolls?NO.more life belts? NO.she considered banning people from walking along the sea wall(promenade) ,why dont they just ban us from crossing the road while their at it.this is getting into a bit of a rant so im gonna stop now lol ::).

I had a fantastic weekend at Plymouth Navy Day in August. I parked my Yaris car outside the guest house where I was staying with a visitors permit in the middle of the windscreen. When I got back I found a parking ticket with the photo attached which showed more pavement than car. When I complained the council said I had to display the permit on the nearside so the warden could see it. I tried to explain that a Toyota Yaris is not exactly a big car and if I did display the permit on the nearside then it would be obscured by the tax disc. the photo showed mostly pavement and the very edge of the permit. All of this was no good I still had to cough up for a parking fine!!
