Nearly a Viking Funeral
« on: April 12, 2009, 07:04:31 pm »

These are pictures of nearly a fire at LLanberis lake. This boat was new to the gentelman who owned it and had just bought it that morning at a local club down the coast fro £240 he was ripped off big time, now why do I say this well heck simple. No fuse to protect the esc,esc to small for the motor,he was told it would run for at least 4 hrs.How the heck can it when the motor in question is a MFA850 that draws supposedly 13amps when powered by a 12v7amp gell cell NO WAY ON EARTH.
he was going to take it back and ask for his money back....cant see it myself

The wiring looks a tad to thin a gauge as well
Still at least he's still got his boat  :-)

Looks like one of the old Mtronics there Dave, the new ones have thermal cut outs and all sorts, I had a bad batch of the old ones a couple of years ago, connect power and poof!
The new ones I have been getting lately have all been fine up to now.

Not related to this particular event but do you blokes take into account motor stall current when choosing ESC ?

This boat was bougth off a member of another club and was ready to run BUT obviously the guy who built it did not know what he was doing let alone the poor pensioner who bought it,and now has to spend yet again to get it right

I once had one of those ESC's go with a massive bang on the work bench as I was testing it.  Frightened the life out of me it did and I've also had two burn out in a model, fitted with a fuse.

I'm not to sure what the issue is here though, I agree that there should be a fuse in the circuit but if there had been what difference would it have made?  The ESC would still have fried.  The fuse would have protected the rest of the circuit from any surge in current but it looks like he has been lucky anyway and there is no other damage.

All he has to do is fit a new speed controller and put a fuse in line and he's away again.  If he buys an Electronize it will come with a fuse already fitted so it couldn't be much easier.  I suspect that the original owner did not expect the ESC to do what it did and sold it in good faith.  His only crime is not fitting a fuse but that doesn't make him particularly rare and that wouldn't have stopped this from happening anyway.

. When you buy a secondhand boat it is like buying a used car, you ether have to check it out yourself or have someone you trust check it out. I wonder how long the boat had been sitting around not being run? Does the shaft turn freely? I let my son try out one of my old models once without checking it out first, the oil had gelled around the shaft in the tube. It started to run then slowed down and blew the fuse.
Regards,
Gerald.
