model boats on a motorbike
« on: April 16, 2009, 01:18:39 pm »

Hi All,

Really needs some help here, I want to be able to carry my club 500 on the back of my motorbike and wondered if anyone had tried anything like this before and if so how did they do it without damaging the boat.

thanks

I used to carry my HMS Kent (57" long) on the back of my BMW motorcycle.I made a stand to fit on the  back rack so that it fit crossways to the bike. I then supported the model on the stand by using rubberised canvass upholstry webbing straps on the stand which the boat was alowed to move around on.( and not rigid)
Not only did the straps absorb the shocks of the bike they also allowed me to corner bends and the boat virtually leaned into the bends as well.
It worked well and never came to any grief, although I did get some strange looks. you just have to watch other road users and pedestrians, as they don't expect it? :-))
How legal it was, I don't know, but I was never stopped by the ol' bill. {-) {-)

I'm sure a Club 500 shouldn't be a problem but it's very much dependant on what type of bike and what luggage you have on it.  I would make a wooden box and devise some method of strapping it to either a rack or the pillion seat.  Bungie cords or a cargo net would do the trick.

One of our members once carried his model boat on the back of his pushbike, held on the rack with bungie cords.   Mind you he wrecked the model!!

My first boat rode to the lake in a 4ft x 1ft x 1ft box, strapped to the back of a Honda 50!
There was even enough room for the stand, a small fuel bottle, some tools, the tranny AND a leather bootlace to start it  O0
An electric boat will be easy - it's the battery charging generator you'll have trouble with  {-)
