 :-)Hello again,
At present I am building a general purpose Cargo Vessel which when complete has a total length of 36". It is not based on any specific ship but generally relates to a vessel size of say 700 feet.
Some of you will probably know that Glyn Guest produced an excellant stand alone plan for the MMB Mag and it is this plan that I have incresed size by 20%.
At the F'csle end I wish to introduce some deck gear such has an Anchor Winch, a couple of non-working cranes for the ships boats and more importantly the two(2) large Cargo cranes which I will probably fit on the Starboard side.
Question is does anyone know of any detailed or skymatic drawings of such machinery that I can research.

What age / period are you building? Do you want steam, electric or hydraulic winches? If you're having cranes then these tend to have their own "winches" etc built in. A cargo ship would almost invariably be able to work cargo from both sides of the ship, so winches on one side only is probably a non-starter. What sort of scale are you looking at? A 700ft cargo ship is a BIG cargo ship. 700/3 looks about 1:233. Err on the bright side and say 1:200 = 1/16" to a foot. As a cargo winch is probably not much more than 6' wide, each winch will only be around 3/8" in width...and the bulwarks only 3/16" high. I wish you luck! You are now into micro-modelling! BY.

Ceres hi there

What plan are your building from?    Glynn Guest has done a few plans for stand-off merchant vessels and on looking at the plans book - the only one I can see shows the Empire Jubilee and this was a World War II catapult aircraft merchant ship.

I do know Glynn has just drawn a recent plan of a merchant vessel - so let's know what plan you are building from - this would give us some indication of what winches and stuff you require.

A lot of winches and deck clutter can be made from various things - from pen-tops to old pieces of Airfix kits 

So give us an indication of your plan as I have said - we could dig out some drawings and soforth.

Hi there Ceres

I have just found a couple of pics of a vessel with the crane set down one side (portside I think) and also, I am reading and looking at the Plans from Glynn's of the Emily May.

What I would err on caution is although the hull looks reasonably stable I would keep all top weight as light as possible so that any fixtures and fittings which you build, try and make from either plasticard or balsa wood and avoid using metal fittings if possible on the deck.   

If you look at the Ships Nostalgia forum - they have a picture gallery - and there are a lot of coastal vessels on there.   You might find a photograph of a suitable vessel which you wish to base your model on.

I am looking for some drawings of modern winches etc., for you - with them being modern though, they will be basically 'box' shapes
