steam engine kits

having watched my son buy a live steam model at Windermere for half the price of the cheddar pintail plant installed, I got jealous and want one for myself, so I am considering having a go at machining an engine for myself.

I have seen the Stuart Turner site, but does anyone know of any more?

I don't mind you'll have a half price. Anyways check these two 'places':

Kits are always cheaper rather than RTR pieces  ;D.

The May issue of the French Model Boat Magazine - MRB - contains a detailed article with many pics of the build of the Quarz paddler engine. No machining required. It just bolts together. I guess his other engines are the same!

Those french engines are more expensive than some Stuart Turner castings!

But surely you'd expect a fully machined engine kit to be dearer than bare castings, or am I missing something here?

I have no idea about French but I did not meet any probs with navigation  ::). French is not Chinese or Japanese...  I guess you've got a bit overheated after a long working day :D

NOPE. Stuart products are still the most expensive (and the best  ???) in the world. Bare castings and RTB machined parts can be hardly compared  ::)

Its a wobbler and the company is in the US.
But the price is cheap enough.
It might be one of those projects to build just for the experience.

Search for Reeves 2000 and also Blackgates Engineering on Google. They both offer a range of engine casting sets from single cylinder oscillators upwards. Reeves have an on-line shop but you may need to buy their catalogue for detailed info. Blackgates site simply lists what is on offer. Have you decided what type/size of plant you want?

hi, Model boats did a V four engine in 1993 and a v twin in 1988 i think. I have both sets of drawings on paper not electronically. Copies should be available from model boats. Also remembering that marine moddelling also has the rights to the v four and produced a detailed book in the plans catalogue.

Hi All,  our club has a Cheddar 'Pintail' vert. boiler with twin osc. and gas tank.  It is in as new condition and may have been tested.  We are thinking of disposing of it but would like advice on what price to ask.

Well, I have taken the plunge and bought a stuart twin oscillator set of castings. So far, the machining is going ok.

I am doing fine with the plans, I also wanted the semi kit of parts that are available, but they were out of stock I am waiting for them to arrive...
