SH60
« on: July 09, 2007, 11:18:43 pm »

Has anyone got any info on the SH60s carried on USS Winston S Churchill in the period from 2001 to 2003. Unit. side code (modex) or any othe data would be great. Working links to websites would be very usefull. I only need details for one aircraft as the other will be tucked away in the hanger.
Many thanks

According to the web site they carry two SH60 (LAMPS 3) type - dont know if they are the type represented by Hasagawa at 1/72, i do not know how much different a 1/96th scale ship would look with 1/72nd's on board

In June of 2003, HSL 46 Detachment One was aboard the Churchill. If you go to their website, their is info on which Specific aircraft they are now flying,. I guess it was the Bravo model. Specific Buno's are probably available there also. The Buno is the "burea number", or tail number. I used to fly with HSL44, The Swamp Foxes

I'll do a little more research, and get back to you.

Here's a better website: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/navy/hsl-46.htm
The logo for the detachment was normally created by the members of the det. It was painted on the sonobouy launcher cover of the aircraft. It was NOT the Squadron logo as pictured on these websites. I could see where it would be hard to replicate one of these logos. Keep in mind, if the mission required the use of sonobouys, the cover would not be inplace on the bird.  Therefore, you could model the aircraft with the cover off, and forego the trouble of adding the intricate detail. In the 2003 deployment, I think the Winston was deployed on a Red/Med cruise, and it was during the summer months. It was most likely the covers were inplace, for crew comfort reasons. (It helped the meager air conditioning stay in the cabin). We rarely took the covers off, as there isn't much need for sonobuoys anymore in the Red Sea, after the demise of the Soviet Sub Fleet.
The cover I am talking about is just aft of the cabin window, on the port, or number one side of the helo.
Anything else I can do to help, let me know.

Here is a link to a 1/100 scale Bravo...I think that is as close as you can get to 1/96. It would be impossible to discern, unless you had an extremely picky viewer that the scale was off.

This kit has the sonolauncher cover off. The decals on this sample are not accurate as far as the colors. There is no black lettering.
Where it says "Navy" and all other lettering, they should be ghost gray. I don't know where he came up with the body art either, but no Det commander is going to let his crew paint on the aircraft fuselage. That's why we always painted the launcher cover. We could easily take it off, when in port or when dignitararies were aboard. The cover would be hidden in the Det shop spaces during these times. (not politically correct pics of scantilly clad wimmens)
Also, if your mission required you not to be identified, such as going feet dry into a foreign country, you didn't want a big road sign telling the bad guys who you were, or what ship you flew in from for opsec reasons.

the  1:100 scale SH-60's are available at  http://www.scaleshipyard.com/Main%20Pages/misc.HTML
They are sold in  pares. I would get them as soon as possible as they have a limited quantity .
I have used these models on some of my warship models and it builds up nicely.
Good luck and it sounds that your are getting good direction and advice from the Forum.

Holmsey's build thread is on this forum, the guy himself has since given up on living in this country due to things that are being talked about on other threads and now I beleive lives off shore on his own boat. Dave's model of the Winston Churchill is now in Rosyth in Scotland, it was built from a Sirmar semi kit, AKA PSSHIPS/ SIRMAR LTD and used our resin SH 60 helicopters. Modified some what from the old Sirmar one. Since 3 years ago I have spent alot of time and resources retooloing alot of the range, but, there is much to do still.

Thanks for that info, Paul. I was wondering why he hadn't responded to the latest posts.
