Hello all
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:55:33 am »

I thought I would make my first pst an introduction.

I'm called Paul, and live in Westhoughton - that's in between Bolton and Wigan. I'm 43 with two boys and new to the idea of model boats.

I quite like the idea of building stuff rather than buying a boat complete or almost complete. For me half the fun is in making things - I have just built a workbench for the garage. It cost almost the same as a bought one, but *I* made it.

That and it fits with the slope on the garage floor!

What sort of boats do I like? I like for want of a better phrase fast runabouts and cruisers - the likes of a Christ Craft or a Fairey Huntsman appeal to me. There is also something about a hydrofoil coming up almost out of the water too! I also like the idea of IC rather than electric, but I suppose it will probably be best to leave that to at least a second boat, so I can find if there is somewhere I could sail it!

So, what to start with? Given the above, the Precedent Huntsman is an obvious thought, I like the idea of the wooden kit, but the glass hull might be a better idea for a first build. Then there's the MFA Fantome and Spearfish, the Aerokits Sea Queen (Though that might be a little big as a starter) and the Billing Phantom - decisions, decisions....

Feel free to tell me why all those are bad ideas, and that I really want to build from a set of plans<S>

I can see this getting expensive, and there's a whole host of terms to learn too!

Paul.

Expensive? dont even start keeping track of spending - and more importantly - dont let swmbo find out!

Thanks for the welcome :-)

I sometimes think that the best way to make a decision is to go with first gut instinct rather than investigate too far - the more I investigate the more options there seem to be!

I also have one or two little ideas on the edge of honesty.

When I say on the edge, I mean hanging on with a single fingernail. "the boat was only £80" is perfectly accurate for a Pecedent small wooden huntsman. Is there really any need to discuss hardware, motor, radio...

Welcome Paul...just a word of warning before you get yourself too deeply involved in model boats.

If you value your sanity, your marriage, your house and your wallet....DON'T DO IT!! Apart from that, enjoy it and have fun modelling...oh, and ignore most of this lot on here, they are all totally raving mad.

Whaddya mean the guys here are mad? Reading have suggested a rather well balanced bunch.

Then again, I have played in many bands, work in the computer industry, build model trains, love a decent coffee, and love old music...

The closest club i can think of, was the NORTHWEST MODEL Boat Club, based at Horwich (near the sqirrel pub), but other than the web site being from 2002 and not listed in the club list, the nearest to you will be St Helens at Taylor Park or Walkden model boat club at Blackleach Reservior, further afeild would be Bury at Bury Lido, and Southport etc

Welcome to the madhouse ............personally I would go for the sea queen as Big is beautifull and you can really make it go with a Mortor from MMB

Warspite - the guys do still sail at the Squirrel - at least they did last Sunday! There are a couple there I didn't know of too. Bury is convenient for Sundays as my parents live that side of Bolton.

Thanks.

Stavros - who are MMB? I've found quite a few on the internet, but can't see much of MMB. I must admt the Sea Queen is rather tempting - it looks a little less detailed than the others so may be a less challenging first build.

I quite like the idea of being thought of as a well balanced bunch.  I don't think we've ever been accused of that one before!

One thing I would suggest to start with to get a feel for what's out there and what can be done is to visit as many clubs as possible, particularly club open days or special event days as well as have a good look around the shows.  There are actually a few coming up in the next few weeks that you would thoroughly enjoy and they provide a perfect opportunity to have a look at the models on display at the club stands and have a chat with the guys that made them as well as have a good look around the trade stands.  If you get out with out spending you've done better than most of us manage!!  As with most things there are a huge variety of possible arrangements of propulsion, radio and accessories and, although we all have our own favourites make sure you check everything out first and decide on not just what suits your model but what also suits yourself and your pocket.  As always though loads of advise available for free on here so make the most of it.

Welcome to the well balanced bunch!!

Thanks for the link to MMB. As I mentioned earlier Wickstead's not an option. Llanberis might be  - especially with the camping - I try to take the eldest a couple of times a year.

I think one of the problems as a newcomer to boats is that many clubs don't seem to have much of an online presence - heck some seem to be litttle more than rumours in cyberspace! I suppose I need to keep an eye on the mags for dates rather than expecting to find much on line.

Hi Paul
At the mention of a preference for Ic...
There is a club at Trafford Water Park with "specialists" in racing boats (probably best not to go there)  %)
http://www.tmbc.org.uk/news.html
Its a sure way to say goodbye to your spare time, money, steady heart rate, etc, etc!
Depends on whether you want a quiet life with a nice, well built model that looks like it's supposed to ...  ok2
Yea, forget IC - its dirty, smelly and only for complete lunatics  {-)

Welcome to Mayhem - an appropriate title for the group of well unbalanced modellers we have here O0 :-))
