ref fixing masts to deck
« on: May 05, 2009, 10:35:18 am »

Hi Neil and Guy
thanks for your help with fixing my masts, have supplied a photo with method I am using, as you can see its a bit belt and braces, but it does allow me to remove the shrouds which will be clipped on under  the trees.
By removing the pin which stops the mast from turning, depressing the mast releases the shroud clips and all other rigging is adjustable the masts can then be removed and placed on the deck ready for transport
thanks again Geoff

Hello,

The masts on my Schooner Bluenose, are removable, they are jacked up after the standing rigging is attached.
All the standing rigging is all of fixed lengths, jacking the masts up tensions it.

A screw with a rounded end and a slot cut into it, fits into a plate on the deck, which has a piece of strong wire threaded though
the dimple, to stop the screw from turning, it forms a screw driver end!.
The mast are able to move slightly to absorb any big gusts of wind, but cannot move upwards because the rigging is holding the down.
A plastic tube fitted onto the mast end will hide the jacking system, I use a cut down Film can.

In my case one of a handful I picked up for a pound at the last Fosse show.   I picked one that was a bit narrower than the mast and felt strong enough to exert a resaonable tension on the rigging once the pin was taken out.    Basically I set up the standing rigging with the pin in - spring compressed - and then take the pin out to tension before sailing.  I put the pin in when storing the boat to take the tension off the rigging.

Cheers
