Brass Sheet
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:44:35 pm »

Hullo,
I am experimenting with etching my own brass parts for my USS Long Beach. The early results are quite promising . However ,I have exhausted the odd bits and peices of brass I had lying around. I am having trouble locating brass sheet at the required thickness. I have been unable to get brass thinner than 26 SWG.
Does anyone know where I can get brass sheet thinner than 26 SWG, or shim stock at .003" or .005".

Cheers

Try Robin at Cammett - he does a lot of acid etched brass model work.

Try a Marine Engineering outlet if you live near one, they use thin brass sheet for shimming to get engine beds etc level.

The K & S is a bit too pricey in my local model shop and the range is none too good.  I do like to support my local model shop I buy 99% of my raw materials there, but  Engineering materials and supplies are not their thing so I buy on line.

I was also going to suggest Metals On The Web

http://www.metalsontheweb.co.uk

but on checking, the thinnest sheet that they do also seems to be 26swg - a handy site for other non-ferrous metals though?

I usually buy from http://www.metal2models.btinternet.co.uk/cataloguemenu.htm most suppliers have 26swg as the thinest sheet. I will have to wait a week or so for next months modeling budget, plus I want to refine my set up a little before I get stuck in.
