Hello everyone

My name is Ken, and I have just joined your wonderful club. I am very interested in building radio controlled models, having just finished my second Tamiya truck. Great pieces of engineering to put together and look great on the shelf. Looked a bit silly running it in the garden by the side of a main road however.

When on holiday in Poole recently, I saw the R/C boats on Poole park lake and was smitten with the desire to make one of my own. The guys down there were very supportive and didn't get fed up with my countless questions. My goodness, what a lot to learn. A quick trip to Bournemouth, to Westbourne models to 'look into it' and I was hooked.
I have scoured the 'net' for all things 'boaty' and now have quite a list of sites in my favourites folder. When I got to Modelboat mahem, I could not stop reading all the 'stuff' there is about this model boating world.    What a club you  have. I wanna be part of it.

I have in mind to build the 'Yorkshireman' tug, and already have write-ups from various places, along with photos, to browse over. ( maybe when its built, I could tow it along the keyside with my Truck)

Nearly forgot to tell you a little about myself.
I am 64 years old and am at present an engineer in the music trade (organs & Keyboards). I live in Newport, South Wales with my wife and a dog called scout (the whippet). I have to be busy doing things, so I like to construct models. I have graduated to radio control and find it fascinating.
Thank you for listening, I will chip in when I can.

Cheers...Ken

Hi Ken,

Welcome to Mayhem! Sounds like you already have all the basic skills needed to take up this great hobby. Good luck with the Yorkshireman, if you get stuck then you only have to ask!

Welcome to the fold Ken, There are a number of local clubs in the area, I sail at the Knapp Lake in Barry (Barry Model Boat club) on Sunday mornings, from about 11am.  Nearer to your abode there is also a club at Cwmbran, another one at Roath Park in Cardiff (Cardiff Ship Modellers). I don't know about the Cwmbran Club, but the Barry club seems to be quite tug orientated, more than half the fleet, about 12 to 15 boats usually turn out. And Cardiff are a mixed fleet of allsorts.

Hi everyone.

Wow, what a welcome. Thank you all very much.

I do have a workshop attached to the house, which will be left over from my job, if I can retire gradually. It's usually got the odd piano there, which has to be covered when the aerosol paint is out and flying around. It's equipped with two benches and 27 mains sockets (why !!!)  It is also carpeted and warm so I can go in there and people will think I'm at work.

Thank you Andy for your kind information. I will definitely be tripping over to Barry, as it's not that far. I should like to see the tugs close up as I think they might be bigger than I thought. ( especially seeing the one on a tractor in the Mayhem picture library)

Have to go now as I've been here 4 hours reading and surfing. My wife thinks it's walkies for the dog time.

Cheers.   Ken

Hi Ken,
Welcome!
Great sailing available at Roath Park with the Cardiff Marine Modellers club. As mentioned earlier large mixed fleet of sail, scale, and fast electric, meeting every Sunday afternoon.
Also excellent facilities at Bryn Bach lake in Tredegar (about 40 minutes from you) meeting on a Saturday.
Both clubs exceptionally friendly, and always avialable with a helping hand.
Makes a nice change from some of the horror stories you see here :'(
Hope to see you soon

Welcome to the hobby/forum Ken, they are a great bunch of blokes on here and hopefully a fund of help for you. Also be prepared for gentle Mickey- taking as well, as you have probably sussed already.

Best regards

Hi Fellas

A relatively new member, replying to some of these postings. I belong to Yeovil Model Warships Association and Shepton Mallet Drifters, main interests tugs and small yachts. Ex RN but no real intention of modelling grey funnel liners, seen too many of them in 25 years!

Ref. best things to come out of Wales, you have all forgotten Katherine Jenkins. Beautiful voice, lovely face, great figure, and a wonderful personality. I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert at Berkeley Castle (just north of Bristol) last August, and then nine of us were invited backstage to meet her, courtesy of her fan forum, that made it a truly memorable occasion.,Her character is great, far nicer than the aforementioned CC.

I find this forum very interesting and informative, as well as humorous, I am a frequent visitor. Been modelling for many more years than I care to remember, but seriously as an RC boat modeller since leaving the RN in 1978. Had a break when I married and left Southampton, until I retired and took it up again.

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all your comments. I am sure I'm gonna enjoy it here.

Nice picture of your doggie, martno1fan, my wife loves it. Here is our 'Scout' the day we bought him. He is two years old now

I have taken some pics of my Tamiya trucks, and this one shows them together in the garden. Both are fully radio controlled with 3 speed gearboxes. The red one has a full set of lights and traficators. This is the last time I shall mention them as it's BOATS for me from now on.

As I mentioned in the ' Westbourne models'  link, I shall be visiting them on Monday to sus out the 'Yorkshireman Tug'  (maybe others if they are similar). We have a caravan at Poole and it's like a second place down there. All that water eh !!  and so near the model shop.  Retirement heaven.

I did study for my 'Yachtmasters' and once owned a little boat. Unfortunately, it made me sea-sick quite bad and I had to give it up.
I guess I see modelling boats as an armchair way of getting back on the water.

Cheers....ken

im glad you liked Sky mate shes a greyhound but shes only small shes 7 now she does get a lot of comments on her looks though.ive had these kind of dogs for years my first was a whippet who i used to race against greyhounds at coursing meetings and took quite a lot of cash off the owners who thought whippets were only good at short races hehe ;D.mind he was a one off the vet once asked if he had stamina and when i said yes he said no wonder his lungs are abnormally big for his size.now enough about dogs and back to boats!!,keep us informed on your progress with finding the boat you want!!,and good luck mate.

Gentlemen, it makes me sad that we have to lead such discussions (wether they are out of any value or not) on a thread which was started by a new member which is an assett to this forum.
Far apart if comments are claimed to be humourous or whatever- I don`t think that this is the right place (started by Ken) to find an conclusion what went wrong.
Though don`t you agree, that any furthergoing discussion should be lead by:
1. A seperate thread?
2. Personal messages?

Whatever went wrong (and I don`t want to fix it on a person or want to judge it)- this is definately the wrong place to clear it.
Remember when Martin (aka Cpt. Dobey) started this forum: We felt happy to have a common place to meet up and share knowledge and informations.
I don`t want to behave like the Forum-police, but we will be charged by the kind of discussions we lead. And the effort of Martin is worth it to be treated with the necessary respect. And what might Ken think about it? That he was stranded on an island of nutters?
So please- stop it. Or do what you would like to do if standing face to face: Go outside and clear it.
B.t.w- if ever I have made any comments, which might have been felt as rude, sarcastic or out of a usual behaviour: I beg your pardon for that.

Topic heavily Moderated -  >:(

Don't worry about all the spurious additional comment Ken, I think it's to do with all the glue we use!  ::)
