Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here is in the process of building/designing a fairly large scale steam yacht, or if you know anyone who is?

Also- among the model boat fraternity, how are freelance model boat designs looked upon- with intrigue, indifference or disgust?

The reason I ask is that for my next project i'd like to construct a model steam yacht- however there aren't any plans out there- not that i've looked to hard admittedly.

Even if there were some however, I would quite like to design my own along the lines of trad' early 29th century steam yacht- something like 'Vamoose' for eg., there were so many made that anything along the lines of , although not immitating, a trad' steam yacht could be looked upon as being a realistic model.

This is my opinion anyway, I just wondered if it was widely shared or weather building a trad' but not contemporary design would be looked upon as a halfhearted attempt and an inferior model?

Greg, that is different and different is always good! Personally to be what I call a steam yacht I prefer something along the lines of the Yarta/Medea which is on the Kingston Mouldings website or even the Deans Marine Komet as these all still have some masts and sails as well as the steam power but in the end you should build what blows your whistle and never mind what the rest of us think. Hi Ian,

Yes I admire Medea's design, a truly beautiful boat, however Vamoose is beautiful in a different way- imagine seeing a 100ft steam launch travelling at, I tihink, 28mph, a bow wave running a quarter the length of the boat, the bow lifting out of the water- all in complete silence- and have you seen a slicker looking launch than that...?

Ps- I havn't done rigging before and it kind of scares me

Like I say, different is GOOD! That sort of scale speed would certainly be impressive, perhaps you could put a water skier out the back? I have a Rayman High Speed steam engine and a 4" variable pitch prop that would work in something like her although I think I will actually order the 52" Steam Picket Boat hull for the convenience of being able to use a GRP hull and boiler housing. Even if there is not any plans you may be able to get photos blown up to the size you want to build and then scale of them. Best of luck and keep us posted. Cheers, Ian.

Greg, you should build EXACTLY what you want to build, it's your hobby and life, and I would like to think you'll be handing down something all the more unique, and more YOU, to your children.

Rick, I agree that is a lovely looking boat- but it's white, it's got a clipper bow, a boring funnel and rigging- all of which don't really make it the type of steam yacht i'd like to model really. Good pic though- how about you model it?
