Graupner Pegasus - anyone built one?
« on: October 16, 2006, 01:39:03 pm »

Dare I attempt this? I'm contemplating building one but my experience with Graupner products is lacking(I'm told I'm missing out by one of the Flying fraternity) . How good/clear are the instructiions ?? What's the quality of mouldings like??  I've completed 2 model slipway kits and I really fancy building a motor yacht. Time is not an issue but I would really like to finish build ready for April May'07 t.v seems pretty rubbish of late so its down to the shed once the kids are in bed. Would it fly together or are there issues with this particulary kit (I've never seen one sailing or finished for that matter)

Alternative, does any one have one part built or in need of tinkering???

My Mate Bradders is building one..... not a quick build I can tell you  :o
The  plans are some of the best and the instructions are a small comprehensive booklet,
( although, subsequently found to contain Many errors! ).

I wouldn't recommend it as a first build though, Have a go at one of the smaller kits first, just to become familiar with the materials.
( Pollux tug, Anja, Fuchs etc. )

I had one of these, never completed  it, but "ebayed"it partially built.

The first kit I had was abysmal. the moulding was seriously warped,  and all ( I mean ALL ) the wooden die cut parts were separated from their frames..  I immediatley returned the kit for replacement, which  in fairness, was done no quibble.

The replacement  came,  I ordered the fittings kit as well...  parts were missing, I wrote to Graupner, they replaced them promptly.

My real "issues" came with the  actual build...  the bigger ply parts were very badly warped, some  parts were just not made to fit, scratch building skills will be required !

Like I say, I abandoned the build as a bad job, maybe I was just unlucky ( twice !  ??? ), Dunno.. Personally I feel some of these very old kits should be retired.. instead of kept  in production with the same old parts...they just dont live up to todays modellers expectations of quality ( IMHO)

It certainly is NOTHING like a Model Slipway build !!

I'd look for a more up to date  kit, where, instructions and parts will be what  you expect..  buy a dinosaur.... an thats what  you will get.

For what it's worth, thats my personal experience of this one.

I don't normally build from kits but  had an opportunity to buy a Pegasus which had been started. I cannot compare it with any other kits but it certainly was a pleasure to just follow the comprehensive instructions and use the excellent supplied materials to produce a very nice looking and performing model.

Powered with 2 Graupner speed 500s running on 6 volts the speed is very good. A 6v 12a/h gel battery gives just the right amount of balance and using 2 msonic controllers the maneuverability is excellent. Martin is probably right saying that it is not a first model but as you have built two already you would probably be OK. All the parts I got were fine - maybe I was lucky ? :)

Hi Welsh_Druid,

I've been asked to finish off a half built Graupner Pegasus III, any chance you could post or email me some pictures of the internals and undersides of the superstructure please?

Hi Propshaft

here you are - hope this is what you wanted.

(you will see there are three speed controllers - one for each motor and one for the bow thruster)

Any more needed of specific parts - just ask.

Best of luck with your build

Excellent and thanks.
I'm no good at reading plans, "pictures paint a thousand word," etc.
Any chance you could post a couple of the underside of the superstructure please, pretty please?

Also, it looks like you replaced the original deck...?

There isn't a lot to see from underneath - just my poor work and painting (or lack of it  ;) ) but here you are, plus some closeups of the superstructure. I bought this boat partly built (the hull with motors, rudders and drive train fitted) and the deck had been planked already. You will note that the upper deck is as supplied in the kit. The small battery seen in the underneath shot is for the interior and navigation lights (LEDs)

Thank you for the photos gentelmen, much appreciated.
I'm really struggling with the build and it doesn't help that I think some parts of my kit may have gone missing, so two further request please;

1. Mr. Druid, I'm trying to construct the main superstructure internal framework, any chance of a few more pictures of the internals and corners please? In particular the two end walls.
2. Has anyone got an unmade kit? It would be really helpful if you take a photo of parts 81, 82 & 87 (rear wall of main superstructure)

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
you can have a look to this page
http://detering0271.de.funpic.de/album/index.html
and to this
http://www.rc-modellbau-schiffe.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=5132

both are from a german guy building her from crates for vegetables so it's very cheap. First shows a lot of pics, second is how to build together with pics.

maybe ha can fit you with the plan ?
