Dare I ask...
« on: June 10, 2009, 04:20:59 pm »

Has anyone converted either a Revell or an Academy Titanic to r/c? I'm looking for information, pics etc to give me an idea as to where to start, what bits to use, etc...anything useful.

Still looking for pictures of internal setups if anyone else has converted one of these?

Revell,i had to source a new port side set of promenade deck windows due to severe warping i couldnt straighten them out without cracking them.

Oh gawd, I had to change to a Revell kit, Antics let me down on the Academy one, Cornwall Model Boats came to the rescue with a Revell version...hope mine is better that yours!
Thinking about it...I bought a Trumpeter Seawolf sub, that was really badly warped on the upper deck sections...

If you're VERY careful, you can use either warm water ( for a whole part) or a hair dryer (localised) to straighten out parts in plastic kits. It takes a lot of practise to do though.

When are you going to actually finish a model Rich? ;) ;D

The Mantua 1:200 Titanic is designed to be converted and comes with RC instructions. Cost a tad more than the plastic jobbies though.

A rather large tad I fear, Ramesh....way out of my present financial circumstances! Mind you, pension day is looming....

Totally agree but the quality of the plastic wouldnt let it happen the replacement was the only option the cut outs for the windows stopped any repairs also

Rich,

I think that you will be very disappointed in the the Revell kit of the Titanic. The Academy / Minicraft has had a bunch of things changed after they got good photos of the actual ship to make it a more accurate model. There are a whole lot of photo etch parts for the Academy kit that really improve it further. Remember if you add enough heat you could make the hull ROUND. ;D

PS Where is Barry anyway when we need his help.

Look, you're all putting me off now....but as it's destined to be a sailing model and not a display one I'm not too fussed about scale fidelity, bits are bound to get knocked off anyway, but I do hope it all goes together half decent. If not....it will be going back pretty smartish. I had enough troubles with the Trumpeter Seawolf, there gaps in the hull/deck joins big enough to sail another ship through, that was a terrible fitting kit. According to a well known source in the US of A, most of them have been like it...

And as for Barry....he's let me down badly here. He's never AROUND sorry, online when you need him. C'mon Bazza..wherefore art thou?

Isn't that what it is supposed to do? You need a few more degrees of angle down on the bow to get it right. ;D

Patience Andre...patience. I plan to it properly, but working out how to arrange for the stern section to snap off as it tips up is proving a bit of a task. Fear not chap...it's possible.

Now come off it! We all know it is arranged to sail like that because 2.4 does not work under water.

As an update to the Titanic build, I've got as far as this:

Both motors are in, hooked up to the shafts and fully operational.
Both esc's are in.
Battery pack is in.
Rx is in.
Although not in these pics, I've installed an Mp3 player which will play music of the era and there is room for internal illumination.

I've used a six channel HiTec Optic radio, two channels for ahead/astern on the motors, one for the Mp3 player on/off and one for the lights on/off.

It's had it's first water test and all is well, it goes forwards and backwards and it stops. It floats...which is good.

I've started on the superstructure...which is interesting to say the least.

Very neat Rich, still all easily accesible and I'm amazed you have room for a sound system as well.  I've used rubber tube as UV joints before and they work very well without taking up much space or too much weight.  Thanks for the pictures they may well help anyone looking at motorising a plastic model of a similar size.
