How lucky can you get?  Lovely boat and unbelieveable to find it on a skip.  I can't help with any information I'm afraid but I'm looking forward to seeing it cleaned up and in service.

Similar story recently, I had an accident on my motorbike and damaged my helmet so had to buy a new one.  When the bin men came I asked if I could give the old one to them or whether I had to dispose of it some other way.  The lad I spoke to said that he knew someone who was learning airbrush techniques and was always looking for things to spray so he asked if he could have it for him.  Obviously I said yes.  The next day the same guy turns up again with a bag of old model bits and pieces, mostly of little use and value and certainly not to me, but I took them down to the pond the next Sunday and offered them to whoever wanted them.  They went within minutes to members who recognised them and appreciated having them.

It just made me feel good to have been able to do so much with an item of rubbish!

If you Google the name of the vessel 'Rutli' you can go to a page on Wikipedia...

Rütli (Grütli in French and Italian) is a mountain meadow on Lake Lucerne, in the Seelisberg municipality of the Swiss canton of Uri. Here the legendary oath of the Rütlischwur first occurred and is remembered as the turning-point in the pursuit of independence. Every August 1st, on the Swiss National Day, the oath is re-enacted to commemorate the forming of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

Land forming the Rütli meadow was bought by the Schweizerische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft in 1859 in order to preserve its state and, among other reasons, to prohibit the construction of a hotel at the historical site. This non-profit company turned the Rütli over to the government as an inalienable gift.

Since 1991, Rütli has also been the start of the "Swiss Way" hiking trail created to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Switzerland.

On 25 July 1940, General Guisan used the site for his speech, now remembered as the "Rütlirapport", to the entire officer corps of the Swiss army in which he outlined the Reduit strategy and his aim never to surrender if invaded (see Switzerland during the World Wars).

That coupled with the Swiss flag on the bow suggests to me that this vessel may have been a Lake Lucerne cruiser?

I could well be wrong here, but I think it's a model of "Bluebird of Chelsea" as she was originally built. All the models I have seen of her (including mine) were as she is "now". The big give-away is the position of the tender boat. The present site (hanging over the stern) is a recent ammendment. Take care of this one as it may well be unique, and become a real collectors item. Don't change it or modify it in any way. If it does date back to the mid 1930s you have a rare bit of the late Sir Malcolm Campbells history. Get it verified. How? I don't know...but I'm sure someone on here will be able to tell you. BY.

Thought the Bluebird had portholes not windows. {:-{

The cabins on the model are to far forward and it has a large well deck at the rear which the original doesn't.

She does now. But She has had such a bizarre life that I think she was chopped and changed a bit. I still think this one is an original. Anybody any ideas on her past life? I'd hate to see it wrecked if I am correct!. BY.

I would contact your mate, find out where he got it from, and ask the previous owners, about the model.
As Bryan has stated, this could be rare model, not for monetary reasons but history

great looking model jason. dont think its the bluebird though, she was 52 ft X 11ft which would make her 39 x 8.5 inches. good luck with restoring her

Could it be an earlier one?  The model has a 1920's look about it?

Is it possible that whoever made the original Bluebird of Chelsea also made more than one for other owners?  Or that some well-off millionaire in Switzerland saw the original and wanted one of his own?

Malcolm, I don't think so. If you can access the original MB articles, and also read some other stuff that I've lost (!), she was found in S.Africa in a state of deterioration and had been chopped around more than a bit. Also, the RN had "ownership" for quite a long time. I don't think that the RN (especially in wartime) would be interested in "cosmetics". Changing square windows to "scuttles" makes sense, after all, the superstructure was made of wood. I'll need a better argument than yours to change my mind. Cheers. BY.

Prior to RN ownership, Bluebird would have been in private hands, having been built by a private builder.  This builder may have had a house style that appealed to my hypothetical Swiss millionaire looking for something to spend his Toblerone profits on pre-war.  Thus the style could have turned up on Lake Lucerne, if not the original's size.
Just a thought for a possible cover story.

Actually it was 1992/2.
I have the plans and articles on disc (done when I was building my model). My details are available in the "profile" section if you wish to call me. BY.

The style is pretty typical of a Thames cruiser. Lots of them. Perhaps 1920s style, but "Bluebird was built in the 1930s. Nothing wrong with tradition. But also, copying a design is a mark of pleasure and respect.
